^^ The copper breaking is pretty common. It's usually because people make the combo switch sit too close to the steering wheel.
You need to adjust it by loosening a pinch collar (10mm bolt IIRC) under the combo switch and sliding it around until it just makes contact with the horn ring.
This will also mitigate most of the scraping noise you hear.

Thanks, I will see if that fixes the problem, the scraping after taking the pod out and having everything apart got much worse after assembly, which is NOT what you want when you try and fix stuff....in fact it sounded like I folded whatever that was left of the copper strip....

Dwayne,
Great post. Followed the steps and fixed all my issues but 1. My master warn and oil level light was on and are still on. I have tested and replaced the level sender and I am confident the wiring is solid. The gauge is the last thing. I was hoping the cleaning would fix it. Any thoughts on a next step?
Thanks,
JB

Instrument Cluster Harness Plug Set + Power for DIY repair?
Anyone know of the instrument cluster harnesses for the blue arrowed areas?
Also how to attach a power source for DIY repair?
Feel free to mention/point out anything you see here as well
I want to repair and test every thing to avoid reinstallation and having problems and/or having to test/repair/put in LEDs by putting in and out of the car.

The 'Instrument' page of the Workshop Manual for your model (year of production) will guide you to what each of the metal connecting strips (on the 'blue lined' connectors) are connected to. I'd try a 9 V or very low amperage 12 V electricity source if I were seeking these answers.. Remember, you'll need to connect to both a ground and the lead to the 'light or instrument.
Learning to read the Workshop manual circuit diagrams can be a task, however, for non-electricians!
Good Luck.

I no longer see Alan's website up at https://928-electrics.com but I'm hoping that's just a temporary thing.
Here's copy that I hope he won't mind my sharing:

Great recommendation jschiller. I had printed a copy and put it in the same binder that has the wiring diagrams for my model car. Alan is certainly an incredible electronics guru for this Forum.

928 Instrument Cluster "tab" repair/replacement ?
Can anyone help with a Bracket replacement? PelicanParts no longer carries them.
Any ideas/suggestions on how to make/retro a plastic tab?
the "tab" red arrows broke on my 1980 Instrument Cluster
there should be a plastic tab in the red arrows
This one tab broke off - i'm tempted to JB weld another DIY tab on?
This is an example of a tab(red lines) that exists on another instrument cluster
