Well, I finally have a minute to make a few comments. It has been a crazy few weeks to say the least.

There were a lot of people involved in getting Shane's car ready to go. A big thanks to Page Auto and Neal for working hard to get the car through the shop with the needed PM and repairs. They had a lot of pressure on them because they knew we had a lot of work in front of us to transform the car into the Stage 3 SuperShark by our deadline.

I also would like to publicly thank Mike Schmidt and Hacker for all their hard work and late hours working on the car. Hacker really went beyond the call of duty to put this whole project together..... Thank you Erik! (and Loreli for letting him out for so many hours). I also need to shout out to Luke at Beyond Redline for doing a fantastic job running the dyno and helping us tune the cars. Super intelligent guy!

Although stressful, we really had a great time getting this project put together.
We learned how to use the Porken 32v'r cam timing tool, very impressive!
We designed a new air/water intercooler (85/86) that totally exceeded our expectations.
We had access to the latest state of the art DynoJet dyno with an eddy current brake.
We learned that we will NEVER road tune another car because it can be done safer and better on the dyno.

We had some problems with some rebuilt MAF's on Shane's car that took a little time to diagnose. The big benefit in having this problem is that Jim R drove his 89gt 16 hours to have me dyno tune his car because he has been fighting some on/off drivability issues the past 10 months. During the MAF diagnosing with Shane's car a VERY BRIGHT LIGHT went on with Jim and I that he also had a rebuilt MAF on his car. We looked at each other when we realized it and said at the same time..... NO WAY!!
Soon as we buttoned up Shane's car and sent him off to the dyno we swapped out Jim R's MAF to a known good one and sure enough.... the car ran near perfect. We drove the car to the dyno with the current chips but when we finally strapped his car down we ditched all the previous tuning and started over (with the exception of some know parameters that needed to be changed). We spent about 2 hours tuning fuel and we were able to get it spot on perfect. The transition from the cruise map to the WOT map is seamless. Luke, the dyno operator/owner (26 years old!), is just incredible with tuning cars. We got the car dialed in perfectly!

We saved the file from the ST, burned a chip, and now the car would not start. (Andrew actually was the one who saved the file so I blame him ;>)) We loaded the file from the laptop back into the ST and the car still would not start. I loaded a base file into the ST and the car started right up. Oohhh ****..... all that time tuning the LH and now we are left with a corrupt file!! Z and I discussed the options.... we really didn't want to go through all the tuning again. Since the fuel tables were still populated with values we decided to take some screen shots of the tables on one computer and open the ST software on another computer and physically input the number into each cell one number at a time. We did that, saved the file, downloaded it into the ST, crossed our fingers, hit the key and it started right up and ran perfect. This time, we kept the file in the ST to be safe, burned a new chip and verified it worked before unplugging the ST and loosing the internal file. Big lesson learned on the protocol of verifying a successful file transfer to burn a chip before dumping the file from the ST.

Tuning the EZK on Jim’s car was pretty easy because all we had to do was look for knock counts with the ST. This did not take long at all and we really didn’t change much from what I had previously done.

The same method was used for tuning both cars. Shane’s ignition tuning was done more by looking at the torque curve. This is where Luke’s experience tuning cars really came in handy because he was able to dial it in very quickly.

The horse power number on Jim’s car is down about 40hp from what he had previously done on Luke’s old Dynocom (he ripped out the Dynocom because too much down time with repairs). This time he was just above the 500 mark, if I remember correctly. We had changed out the supercharger to a T-trim, which should be more efficient but he was down about 2 psi boost from the last time we dyno'd the car. I can’t explain why that is because nothing else really changed and the T-trim is a more efficient sc. Either way, Jim’s car runs absolutely perfect and he is ecstatic with it. I think he called me no less than 5 times this week thanking me and the crew. Driving in Jim’s car feels way faster than the last time I drove in it. This thing really puts you back in your seat.

Even though my wife's 87 car makes 30-40 more HP than Shane's car, I think Shane's car feels just a bit quicker. We should have lined them up.... would have been interesting.

Shane will be passing right by Prof Ott’s on his way home, maybe he can strap it on his dyno for comparison sake. I did take out 2 degrees of timing when I finalized Shane’s chip for a little safety margin. I think it only dropped 4-5 hp.

I have to say that I am very pleased with how everything turned out. Both of these cars run exactly like they came from the factory this way, 42lb injectors and all.

Thanks again to the entire cast of characters that showed up for the weekend. Everyone helped out in one way or another which made it fun for everyone.

Hacker is working on my website (right Hacker?) and I will have lot’s more pictures as well as videos of the dyno runs on there. These cars sound totally wicked on the dyno!

Hi Tim
If you need to copy a map from one SharkTuner file to a new one, capture all the cells on the required map with with mouse in the usual way and do "copy". Then click the mouse on the top LH corner cell of the "new" map and then do a "paste" command and all the cells with be changed to those of the source map.

John, we are about to fire up the Sharktuner here in DFW...... Does it have those cool "Sharktuned" stickers in it?

Hi Sean
No, it does not. I had a few pair made for a 928 Racer who I am sponsoring here in the Porsche Open Championship. (as per my avatar)

I have a few pairs left. They are only suitable for external application to the cars bodywork, not internally on a window.... I could have that type available if there is the demand.

You are welcome to a pair of the exisiting ones.

Whose car is about to be SharkTuned ?

Hmm, I think mine or Rogers GTS will be the DFW test subject. (x-pipe etc) Nothing official though.
And external stickers are just peachy. How much do ya want for them?

Oh sure.... now you tell me

Actually, we figured it might be something as easy as that but we didn't want to take any chances. That was the first time I ever had a problem saving a file (besides saving it as 16kb vs 32kb).

I said it before and I'll say it again.... The SharkTuner rules!!

Congratulations Tim and the rest of you. Sounds like you had fun and expanded the
horizons of 928 ownership.

You can have a couple for the cost of postage - about 15 USD.

Left Las Vegas yesterday at 1:30ish and was able to cross the border into Idaho where we stopped for the night in Twin Falls. We should be on the road again in a couple of hours and headed into Oregon to the Land of Ott.

The 928 is still running sweet and still getting about 19mpg.

So who won?

2 great looking and powerful cars!

Pretty cool jets huh! You should see the tools he can "borrow"

Awesome!
Good to see you guys made it. What was the total distance? Almost 4,000 miles? Already due for it's first oil change!!!

In a way, those last two pictures are a little sad, seeing the car so far away in her new home......but what an awesome home it is!!!

We stopped by Louie Ott's place around 7:30ish and dropped off a couple of presents that Hacker sent out with me from Green Bay. They were well received Hacker!! Stayed there for a while taking a break from driving and then hit the road for Portland where my wife left her Buick in long term parking. From there we made the short caravan up to the house.

I'm really impressed with they way this car drives and behaves, almost like a stock 928 at lower rpms, but as soon as you really open the throttle it takes off like a banshee, sets you back in your seat and leaves your heart in your throat. The engine will rev so fast to redline that the automatic tranny can't shift fast enough before the rev limiter kicks in. It will bang off the limiter once, shift up and take off again, leaving your guts sitting in the back seat.

Thanks Tim, Erik, Mike & Todd and everyone that helped make this happen! Mostly though I have to thank my wife who tapped into our earnings from the bar sale, and gave me the green light to make a dream become reality.

After reading this I really need to get a ride in a supercharged shark! Sounds like a hit of adrenaline at the drop of your foot.
