Default 83 5spd. (syncros are apparently shot - rv)

After driving for a few weeks with a jumper installed,I finally purchased a new fuel pump relay, and it seems to have solved the problem of dying out at the most inopportune times. Now the real problem. The transmission. The syncros are apparently shot in first and second gears.I rebuilt the clutch slave, changed the trans fluid,to no avail.Exactly how difficult is it to perform this?I have looked thru some posts and frankly think it may be too involved.I have fairly good mechanical skills, and adequate tools, yet, the repair manual, with it's list of special tools, tight tolerances, and extraordinary number of parts leaves me more than a bit leery.Assuming that it is indeed just syncros, how much would it be to have the work done professionally? Also, would it be more reasonable to purchase a used transmission, and install it myself? Thanks for your help.

I just went through the same issue. I decided to buy a used one rather then deal with a transmission rebuild shop. Got a newer style 5 speed with LSD for $2200. Once I am complete with the swap, I will open the old tranny to see how difficult a synchro change is.
But from what I heard it is easy to spend 2 - 3k rebuilding and then you still have a tranny with crappy synchros.
