Default Climate Control LED Lighting-Too Bright in Center

I replaced the stock incandescent bulb in my HVAC control unit with a 5mm blue LED. Works fine, but the illumination isn't dispersed evenly across the overlay-its much brighter in the center. I like the color, but it has to be more even. Anything I can do to even it out a bit?

Wide angle or narrow angle LED bulb?
Think the wide angle bulbs have that blunt concave tip.

How deep is the bulb buried in the climate controller. I've only gotten as far as the AC relay replacement.

I think that's the problem-I just ordered a few wide angle (120 degrees) leds to try. Once you have the unit out of the dash, it's not difficult to get to the bulb.
