Default Gearbox compatability?

Would the 4spd auto box from a late '86 ROW S2 fit a '88 ROW S4?

The torque converter and flex plate are different and so is the kickdown pressure cable.

Hi

Are you sure, hes talking about the S2 box (like mine)

The S2 (86 ONLY in Uk) has the same suspension, brakes etc as the S4, as far as I know the ONLY difference is the engine ...S2 = 16 valve....S4 =32 valve...

Maybe the Flex plate but I doubt torque converter...

All the best Brett

I am pretty sure that Fabio is correct about the torque converter housing - - the diameter of the torque converter housing on the 88 box is larger than the 86 box -and the S4 body shell has a correspondingly larger hump between the rear seats to fit the larger housing.

However the 88 box will fit straight in - just expect the odd clunk on violent acceleration as the TC housing kisses the surrounding bodywork.

The kickdown cable on the 88 is also different to the 86 - You can't use the 88 cable because it is all wrong where it meets the throttle body - and the the 86 cable has the wrong plastic fitting on the outer sleeve where it fastens into the box, so you'll need to carefully remove the crimped on metal fitting from the 86 inner bowden cable, which will allow you to then remove the plastic fitting from the outer of the 86 cable. Cut off the end of the 88 inner bowden cable and remove the plastic outer fitting and fit this to the 86 cable, then braze the carefully removed 86 inner fitting back on to the 86 cable.

'83-86 4sp autobox into '87+ is easier than other way around. But Porsche did have a reason for larger tq converter. Not saying it will not work but I would rather spend £ into rebuilding stock S4 box.

If you want to talk to someone who has done this exact swap, talk to Firemed. He did this swap into Whitefox's S-4 a month ago.

Hi

Not sure Firemed did...

The 86 S2 was never released in the USA...

It was only released for 1 year in the UK ....it is NOT the same as a standard UK S2 and it is NOT what you call an 86.5

Its a VERY strange version of the 928...

It has a 16 valve engine, it has S4 (32 valve) suspension, brakes, and various other S4 parts...

I can find out tomorrow for definite for you Bert what you will or will not need if you wish ?

All the best Brett

'86 UK S2 and ROW S has S4 stuff in it but gearbox is not included. They use exact same earlier version of torque converver AFAIK.

Whitefox bought it from Motorsports Utah and was told it was an 86 Euro trans.

PS

The reason for the earlier detailed post was because I have done the 89AT into 85 body job. Two years ago into Eric's (Dragon on Rennlist email) red '85.

Thanks all. I had spotted a used box on ebay and thought it might be less trouble than rebuilding my own box if it was an exact swap. I carry out most of my work on my drive so if i hit any problems i'd be screwed! I think i'll end up getting my own box rebuilt - thank god for car allowances! My car is currently swallowing up my monthly commpany car allowance much to my better halfs annoyance!
