I tried to register my new car today but I failed the emmissions test due to a "faulty gas cap". They said there is supposed to be a gasket around it and there wasn't. One other person (Cameron) said his car didn't have one either, but 928Intl confirmed that there is supposed to be an o-ring in the cap. Just curious if anyone has actually seen this o-ring in their gas cap before? I have one on order but it'll be a few days till it gets here. Bummer for me.

There is a seal. It is on the fuel filler neck, not on the cap. I thought for a long time on my car that the o ring was missing until I ordered a new one. Come to find out it was always there. It fits on the very end of the filler neck and it is not an o ring but a moulded seal, if you look closely it is probably there.

Jay,
Bruce's comment matches what we thought last night based upon our telephone troubleshooting and comparison of cars. Let's see if anyone else can confirm this.

I'm going to be so mad if the new gas cap comes in and there's not an o-ring on it. I saw the ring/gasket on the filler neck and it looks like it makes a tight seal.
I even specifically asked the emissions people if maybe since this isn't a very common car, then maybe they'd like a second look. They were rude and just said no, it's a 13 year old car, the gasket is gone, it happens.
Time will tell.

Jay,
Had the same thing happen to me in NJ several years ago. There is no O-ring in the cap. The seal is on the filler neck. I went back to the station and told them that the cap cannot be tested after finding out there is no o-ring. They gave me a sticker.
Last year I went to inspection again and had no issues. They knew the cap was not to be tested. Maybe they updated the software program to state 928 caps can't be tested.
Worse case is to go buy an o-ring and put it in the cap so they can "test" it. Then just take it out.

Ugh!!!!!! I'm so frustrated!!! The new gas cap will be in tomorrow and I'll just bring it down and show them and then hopefully be able to return it.
Thanks for everyone's input.

Jay,
If it turns out that you would not need the new cap, I would be happy to buy it from you. My cap doesn't look real good and I was thinking of buying a new one anyway. Those things aren't keyed to match the regular keys are they ?

Hi Rob,
I got the locking cap, but it comes with its own set of keys. I bought it at Checker Auto for $29. On a side note, I saw a genuine Porsche used cap for $60 from one of the big 3 (I forget which one), and a new one for $130. Go figure, $130 for a gas cap!!
We'll see what happens tomorrow.
