Loose Wires Under Gas Pedal
84 Euro AT Transmission - 89k
Under my gas pedal there is a circular device (against the wall-lower portion) that has two wires coming from it, one white - one black. They are not connected to anything and it looks like someone spliced the wires (?) but I can't seem to find where they lead/go to.
Any Ideas as to where these wires go to and what does this circular device do?.
Thanks

Yea,
Sure sounds like the kickdown.
It also sounds like someone has spliced it closed??
I would have the kickdown switch either rehooked or replaced, whichever may be your condition. I have heard that running your tranny in fulltime kickdown mode ain't a good thing.......

Why would anyone splice the kd switch closed and What would be the benefit of doing so?.
Thanks for the information -
David/Anyone - Is it possible to get more detailed instructions on wiring this back Up. I understand the format, but I'm still shady on the electrical stuff.
Thanks guys, I appreciate it.

You are missing all the fun if the kickdown switch does not work. If you are going to fix it, you should do what Tony did.
Here is a link:

Awesome site you have there Tony!

Guys, this is what is so puzzling.
If I'm on the freeway and depress the pedal, my car will kickdown. At higher speeds, say above 65 mph, she won't and I have to manually drop to a lower gear. Is this the norm?
Jerry - thanks for the link, I'm printing the info as we "speak".

Hey Drewster,
Go ahead and do 'Tony's Kickdown'. That one mod made a huge positive impact in the personality of my car.
I was ready to sell it since I just don't like automatics, but this made the situation much more bearable.
The car was so clean I had to buy it, despite the automatic.
...Try it, you'll like it! (..I forgot which old-time commercial that came from!)

The factory hookup on the kickdown switch for the '84 is probably a black wire running from the switch to terminal A5, and a gray/brown wire running to terminal K1.
"A" is the first plug on the left on the bottom of the central power panel, count up to "K", skipping the "I" (that is "i")plug.
You should be able to find the cut-off original wires somewhere near the switch. You might find them running to a manual switch - if so, leave the manual switch and connect the pedal switch in parallel with it.

Hey! You know I asked this question before but didn't get a response. I wonder if I need to make it a post and get some attention on this subject. It seems to me alot of us have this switch, and like you I leave it "on" as much as possible. Can you imagine if this caused damage so that we would have to pull the trans?!! what if it caused the "brains" to go defective or??
Again anyone know if leaving the full throttle kick down switch "on" during normal driving has any effect on the car? <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

Wally I saw your Notes regarding forum discussion and I don't think - It's all good = qualifies as a valid response regarding the auto trans KD switch wiring.
History of my Shark -
It originally had a five speed but was replaced with the 4spd auto. (??? as to why)
The kick down switch has been bypassed permanently. The guy I bought the car from thought this would be best.
So after two hours of crawling on my back and looking for the cut wires I remembered that this car originally had a 5 spd so no KD wires would of been placed.
Rather than wiring in the kd switch, I left well enough alone so in turn - It's all good (at least my ignorance tells me so)
Thanks again for your advice - It truly does go appreciated and no I don't want a refund :-).

Dave - after reading Wally's comments regarding discussion forums, I thought it best to add my comments; and honestly ... I totaly forgot about the trannny swap. My bad and I apologize to everyone - I'm on a learning curve.
I also tried to contact the previous owner but have been unable to (regarding the KD switch) I do remember him saying that he thought the five speed was rough and liked the acceleration factor on KD better than the 5 speed.
Different strokes for different folks!
