LETS TALK EURO'S
Hey everyone, I have a 79 euro 5 spd and i am trying to find out as much about the car as possible. I have had it for a year now and im just now finding time to investigate things on it. How it got here, what differences between euro and U.S., etc... I bought my car from a gas station/garage. Not knowing much about the 928 other than its a great looking car I bought mine for $4500. The interior and exterior are in pretty good condition. The car drives great after fixing a few oil leaks (thats how I got it so cheap) The problem is I dont know the history on it. Someday I will make it back down to that gas station to talk with the owner to see if they know anything about it. The story I got from them is that the owner brought it in for service and all the service it needed was gonna cost too much so he let them buy it from him, or something like that. Anyway the car has been running great for the last year and I have been fixing little things such as electrical gremlins that we all have.
The stats on my car:
79 Porsche 928
Motor: M28/01 8190241 (not sure what that means)
VIN# 9289100368
Door sticker:
Mario's Motors
"mfd" by:
dr.ing.hc.f.PORSCHE (not sure what that means)
Imported by:
Auto Houston
About the exterior:
Has cheap "ford" front marker lights in front of front wheels.
Has German front marker lights behind front wheels.
Has cheap "ford" rear marker lights behind rear wheels.
Has Euro rear fog lamp.
Has rear bumper pads.
Exterior is Red (originally white, i think) with 16" polished slots.
About the interior:
Instrument dash pod warning lamps are all in German.
Climate control is in German.
Lever for speed control is in German.
Has headlight position **** on left side of drivers seat on floor.
Has radio fader **** on left side of drivers seat on floor.
Has rear fog lamp switch in the dash pod where the trip reset lives in U.S. cars
Has trip reset switch mounted under dash left of steering wheel.
I want to investigate everything on this car. What "Euro" really means and what other people have found on their Euro cars.
Thanks for all you input.

Curt,
Your euro is really a ROW (rest of world) car as indicated by the "1" in the VIN. Maybe PCNA can tell you where the car was originally sold. The importer was Houston Auto and it was federalized by Dr Ing (probably in Houston). You may find a hint of where it was actually sold by checking the recesses of the glove box and taking the trim off the console. My euro still has the German Auto Club sticker on the windshield.

Wasn't "Dr. Ing." Ferdinand Porsche? I recall, the Dr. Ing. H.C.F. were his various and sundry titles that were used in the company's official name. Don't know what they all mean, but that's what I heard.

So, is a ROW car a good thing or bad thing, and is my car of more value than a U.S. spec car?
Not that it matters if its worth more or not the car looks good and is a blast to drive.

Not for a Euro. PCNA has no information on Euro cars. You need to contact Porsche in Germany.

Almost correct,
However, special cases for cars sent to Australia, England (RHD) and Japan (again RHD)...
Lots of different codes for the countrys but sometimes only subtle changes...
My 89GT is Cdn spec... code in the rear hatch says C36 -- (for Canada..)
It has a km speedo and celcius temp on the heater controls but english warnings....
Can't switch to mph either (89 and up digital dash)as most US can switch to km/h.
The 928 Forum has an article (i'm the author ;-) )about a Euro 86 with a 32 valve (aust. spec engine 9:1 compression vs. 10:1 US) Just one of the many variants out there..

Hey Curt,
I tend to believe that the Euros are worth more..but many don't since parts are harder to get and if you break something..well...you may just replace it with US spec parts...
One thing to watch out for are the cams....they tend to break (passenger side most frequently)and since most shops can't find suitable Euro replacement cams in a reasonable amount of time...in go the stock US cams....
If you are considering a Euro..you will need to check this out....
On your 79...the difference in HP was minimal...220 US spec vs 230 or 240hp Euro...but basically the same 4.5 litre engine....That changed with the Euro 928 S ...4.7 litre 300hp CIS till 83 and then 310hp LH (twin distributor) in 84 to 86.
To me it would be awesome to find a early 78 (possibly 77 build date) Euro with all the original Euro parts on it...built exactly the way the factory had intended to back when 928 production started...
Rumor is that there is this car (serial 0001) somewhere out here in the PacNW...If it's true you can bet I will write a story about it in the 928 Forum with many many pics....

Has anyone delt with AutoHouston before? I was hoping they would have a internet site but they dont. Anyone have a phone number or anything?
Thats it for now.

You may want to check Wallace env. testing or Wallace Env. labs (can't remember the exact name) but they were the ones who did James Morissons 92 GTS import. The are located in Houston and may in fact be the same company (name change?).
Here's the link to their site..
