How much for a car like this???
The next one I’m looking at is a 85s, Auto, less than 100k miles, mechanic owned and maintained, new timing belt and water pump, no electrical gremlins, mechanically 10/10, exterior cond 8/10, int cond 7/10, A/C blows cold and climate control works. The guy wants $5k even. Slate blue over tan hides. Worth a look I’d guess. Based on some other prices I’ve seen for this vintage, the price seems low. Thoughts?
Thanks a ton!

Pre-purchase inspection at a qualified mechanic is an absolute must. That price does seem too low...by about $3K if not more. Be suspicious.

yup, do an inspection, but just because it is priced right does not mean there is a problem. In 1992 I bought my '89GT that had 10k miles on it for $44k. Was a great deal then and still looks good 10 years later.

I pulled this information from Edmunds.com, being that I think Kelley Blue Book is a Frickin Joke. Have the inspection done, you'll be glad you did. I didn't know the zip for Los Altos so I used my zip in Phoenix.
1985 Porsche 928 2 Dr S Coupe
Color: Light Blue
Mileage: 90,000
Condition: Clean
Zip: 85208
Trade-in Private Party Dealer Retail
Base Price $5,179 $6,617 $9,015
Optional Equipment $183 $235 $356
Color Adjustment $0 $0 $0
Regional Adjustment $159 $203 $277
Mileage Adjustment $854 $854 $854
Condition Adjustment $0 $0 $0

8k is about what it's worth.

The (BOOK IS BULL)
The car is worth what the buyer is
willing to pay.
1985 928S, 32 4v, nice car, low miles (under 100)
every thing works, nice!
Some people will pay 10+
Have it looked at HARD!!!
5K a steal
Good luck

Seeing as I recently went through this myself, 5k seems on the low side for an 85 in the condition you described. I would have expected more like 8-9k if the mechanical is a 10.
If it's owned by a mechanic, find out WHY? he's selling it. Don't ask over the phone, do it in person cause you want to see his facial expression/body language when he replies. My PO told me straight up he had to unload it fast because of financial trouble. he already sold his Harley and had his boat up for sale as well. Explains why I was able to get, IMHO, a low-ball price on my 83 5-speed.

In response to your comment, the BOOK IS BULL. I would almost agree with you but .... if you are intersted in buying a shark, but have to finance the purchase through a bank - the book is not BULL. Yes I agree, a cars value is what your willing to pay but again, if you need to finance the deal, a bank will use the book to estimate the value it will loan against the car. Pure and simple fact. That's why Edmunds is better at value assesment being that kelley Blue Book strictly low ***** 928's..

true, Porsches are especially unique like that. I purchased
<a href="http://www.patedwards.net" target="_blank">"The Predator"</a> for 3K and sold it for 15K and I only had about 7-8K into it total.

Well, not directly bu tin general there are very few Ligeti's around so it is possible. The name Ligeti didn't even originate untill WWII when it was derived from Lichtenstein.

It does sound low, but sometimes deals happen. I just purchased a 1983 from a mechanic for 5K and it was almost as good as he said it was. Still though I needed some work done which I could have avoided by having it inspected, so do that first. Might want to do a search on <a href="http://www.oldcartraderonline.com" target="_blank">www.oldcartraderonline.com</a> to see what others have theirs listed for. Good luck.

Take that car to DEVEK for a PPI. I did, and it was worth the $150.00 to find what was really wrong with the car described as "great condition" and save thousands later !! Whew!! What a bargain.

Guess that just made my 78 worthless, Maybe even have to pay someone to take it.
Nah, going to get it painted and drive it for at least 12 more years. Sooner or later it will be last one on earth.
