Post Timing belt question

My car has been in the shop for almost three months now. Parts on back order and my mechanic has his own project down in North Carolina. So he works at the shop and then goes down south for two weeks. But this is the latest hold up. My 1982 928 has a square notched timing belt. When he ordered the part they sent him the other belt because he thought that was the correct one. Now I thought that the belt's tooth profile was changed in 1983. Does this mean that someone has change the sprocket on the cams, oil pump, and crankshaft?

The early model years had the square toothed belt. Later models use the improved round tooth belt. If your '82 is square, that is the stock configuration.

Thank you Randy, I think that who ever sold him the parts was wrong. This makes sense now. <img src="graemlins/beerchug.gif" border="0" alt="[cheers]" />

It is possible to upgrade the cam sprockets on the earlier square toothed belted engines to the later round tooth sprockets and belt. We have seen later round tooth sprocket engines with square tooth belts installed

So, please be sure to have your mechanic check & double check and install the proper belt for the gears that are on the engine.

Thanks Susan, I was not going to mention this, but I will now. My mechanic said that he spoke to someone in the 928 Mechanic community (not sure who yet) and the mechanic told him to put the round tooth belt on the car even though it has the square tooth profile on the cam, oil pump, and crankshaft. My mechanic told me that he felt that he was educating a Porsche mechanic. Glad that my mechanic is taking his time and thinking before acting.
