Fixed this today. Removed air box, and the connector for the fluid level sensor. Lifted up on the reservoir and pulled it free of the old grommets. There's rust around the top of the MC, under the old grommets:

I inserted the new grommets by using a plastic panel tool with a rounded tip, to push the new grommets into place.

As an aside, what is the deal with the plated bracket that sandwiches between the Brake MC reservoir and the brake booster? It has a pair of tabs that look as though they ought to be holding the reservoir in place. However, if you install it so that the tabs 'catch' the seam in the reservoir, the bracket no longer slides over its mounting studs on the booster.

So if it doesn't capture the reservoir, WTF good is it? Just makes it a bigger PITA to R&R the brake MC mounting nuts....

What years have this bracket? Was there a time when reservoirs were shaped differently?

Lizard931: I hope you are kidding about the pressurization thing! That could make a big mess. Pull up and rock: it will come off. If you have that bracket it will need to come off.

That bracket seems to hold the reservoir down. Whenever I ask myself "is this part really necessary" I think Porsche wouldn't have just put extra parts (extra expense) just for the heck of it. They must have thought it was important to bother putting it on my car. So I put mine back but it was indeed a pain to get on.

I hesitated to post the last picture because (I think!) the orientation of the bracket in that pic is wrong - before I pulled the reservoir, the bracket's tabs were _below_ the flange in the tank. Same thing on my '93. Of course, I have had the reservoir off in both cars, so maybe I installed the bracket the wrong way on both cars (?) But I don't think so, since both reservoirs are fully seated into the grommets in the MC. Right now, I could walk up to either of my cars and pull the reservoir up and out of the MC, there's nothing but the grommets holding it in.

Anyone care to weigh in on the proper relationship of this bracket to the reservoir? Is it supposed to hold the tank down, or is it the 928's appendix? I poked around for other pictures of brake MC's and reservoirs but couldn't find any.
