Steering Rack- fluid in the boots?
I have a 91-S4 that has been sucking steering fluid. I jacjed the car up and found fluid leaking from the boots. Should there be any fluid in the boots? If so does this mean bad seals?
Thanks

Sorry PJF,
Any fluid in the boot area has already leaked past the rack seals. I think its time for a re-built rack. These should be available from the big3 and others. The job is really not that bad, just a PITA. No matter who does the job, be careful that they follow the correct alignment procedures afterward.
Good luck,
Vince

Before getting a new steering rack of having it overhauled I would suggest that you visit 928 Specalists Web at: http://www.928gt.com/928tips/steering.htm
as this give give you a testing procedure put out by Porshe under their TBS Number 9038.
After testing and you have a leak then you will hve to replace it.

Before ripping the rack out, try a silicone based steering pump stop-leak from your parts store. It's quick and cheap(if it actually works), it is worth a try as it couldn't hurt. It's definately not mechanic in a can but worth a try for 5 bucks. FYI it worked on a 944 rack I had though I used an auto tranny stop leak that my company makes.
