Steve,

Thanks for all the trans info. Was that page you scanned from the MB manual? (it didn't look to be from any of the Porsche books, and looked suspiciously like a page from the manuals for my old 500 SEL).

Back to the question at hand. I hate to be the bearer of bad news but...

The answer is no and yes. No, they are not a bolt-on swap until 86.5 cars. Yes it can be done. GTS does require that you have 17" wheels for clearance, no matter which way you put them on. You can however, go to the S4 front (and rears) with 16" stock wheels.

There are 2 ways to go that I am aware of...

1. Bolt on spindles, upper and lower control arms, and (recommended) tie rods from an 86.5+ donor car. This will take care of the front. To bolt on the rears, you need the hub carrier from the newer car. (I have heard mixed responses on installing the newer axles as well, depends on who you talk to, even at all the 'big 3'). I would, just to be on the safe side. When they have them in stock, 928 Specialists sells a kit for $1500. The nice thing about this is you can sell your S4 brakes and udate to GTS as a bolt-on when you upgrade to 17" wheels (if you haven't already done so). And, it's the 'factory way' so you know that it will work.

2. Devek sell adapter brackets for the front only, that allow you to bolt-on S4 or GTS brakes. Ain't cheap at $500, but it is probably a well-done piece. And it's a bolt-on (read: mucho easier than swapping suspension). I remember reading an old post on installing S4 rears on a 79 on this list (search archives), using some spacers (ie washers). I have lined them up for grits and shins on my '84, and it seems like it would work, but I didn't really look too hard.

Kinda depends on your wheel size, and how much $ you wish to lighten your wallet by. I'm going the full suspension route, as I have 17" wheels, and need the ABS stuff so that I can drive the PSD computer.

HTH,

Greg
