Calling all Cars!
Hey EVERYBODY!
I have a little(?) request.
A possibly serious question has reared it's
ugly head on the ability of the K&N Air filter to do just that.
I, personally, haven't had a problem with it others have.
What I'm asking is: when you get a chance carefully pull the filter and :
1.) Look at the airbox is there an oil film ?
2.) Is there grit in the oil film?
3.) If there is no oil film is there grit?
4.) Is there ANY debris in the air box?
5.) Is there any debris on the MAF/Throat screen?
6.)If you have had a idle/stalling problem associated with a sticking idle stabilizer/flapper valve could you post at same time along with type of filter you were using i.e., stock, K&N.....
When you take that puppy out put it down on something clean as it is oily and STUFF will stick to the bottom of the filter. O.K.?
Appreciate it guys, the intent here is not to prove a point but to keep our engines healthy.

Dear John:
The curb weight for an 86.5 (which is probably heavier than a 1982) is 3351 lbs. (3439 lbs. for the AT).
The Gross weight includes all fluids and four passengers that weigh 150 lbs each plus luggage.
Therefore, the real weight of your 1982 with a full tank of gas and both of you in it will very likely be considerably less than 4,000 lbs. YMMV.

Hi John. I'm a perfect candidate for this as I am replacing my K&N after a full year of undisturbed operation that included trips to Wichita 2000 and Devek Days 2001. (I know I should disturb my air box frequently to check for obstructions).
I found (1) piece of broken reflector, (1) leaf, (1) grashopper. When I dumped the K&N upside down on a clean surface, tons of tiny black particles fell out and about (3) flies. The underside was clean.

No detectable film.
> 2.) Is there grit in the oil film?
No film.

No grit in the middle nor down the AFM with the exception of some minor grit at either end by the air box mounting bolts. Though I cannot testify that my air box was perfectly clean at installation one year ago.

No.

No

My K&N worked fine. I'm only replacing it with stock because I like the look of the stock filter. Plus I don't want to hassle with the cleaning kit.

Hey John, I'll contribute what I can. I've been running the stock filters ever since I purchased my GT almost 2 years ago. I typically remove, shake out, and re-install my filter every time I'm under the hood for any length of time, and install a new air filter every other oil change. I usually find a small amount of grit UNDER the filter when doing this. I'm very careful trying to not let any grit/debris fall off the filter during the removal process, but you can't be perfect, so some of the grit may be coming from this. Also, at around 87K miles, my idle stabilizer valve started acting up. I did the penetrating oil "temp" fix with good results. I have a little over 89K now with no recurrence.
On a side note, from discussions with other 928 owners, I seem to pick up more road debris than most. Almost every time I clean the filter I have one or more of the following: cigarette butts, small twigs, lots of bugs, leaves, bird feathers, plenty "o" sand/grit, and occasionally some paper type trash. I've checked/cleaned the filter in one week intervals before, just to see at what rate these items were being picked up, and I found it pretty scary. I've shown my "one weeks worth of driving" filter to others, and it compares to their "six months worth of crap" filter. Now I do put more miles on than most, as mine is a daily driver, but this seems like alot to me. I'm just glad that the filter is filtering this crud out as good as it is. Hope this info helps the investigation.

Dan and Chris,
Thanks guy's every scrap of info helps.
Dan, Can't blame you for the switch back, the K&N is one oily little bugger to handle. Kind of like ; what to do with all the bacon grease after cooking breakfast at a family reunion. Which is why I was wondering about filter oil migration over time from the K&N and if if picked-up GRIT.Thanks again, John
Chris, I sometimes wonder how much of the nasty stuff I am responsible for knocking loose when I'm nosing around under the hood.
That does sound like a lot of trash heading to the intake area. I, too, am happy that the trash is staying on the RIGHT side of the filter. Pattycakes is a daily driver too, but this town is SOoooo small I only have the pleasure of tooling around about 25 miles a day but even with 4-7 Dust devils a day some of which are ENORMOUS I'm not collecting trash like you are - I'll consider myself lucky-. Thanx for the input.
Ed, All things condidered. Do you know of anyone who rode in the 928's back seat for very long. Like over 40 minutes? Is there a law against it? Even my daughters friends.
All 7th-8th graders around 88 -112 lbs draw the line at cruising for more than 15 minutes at a time, cool car or not!
Speaking of weight are vetts' much lighter?

According to the current issue of car 7 driver, a 01 Z06 vette (the one that smoked it's 996 turbo competition) weighs 3126. My best calculations tell me that would be equivilent to getting rid of Roseanne Barr and Rosie Odonell from a 928. Well maybe that's not quite a valid comparison.

Carlos,
1) Sorry, somewhere in the past I merged you and Snowball together. Perhaps the delightful painkillers I was taking at the time. As penance I have gone over all posts since June to see where I may have blundered
...no help there.
2) I may be politically incorrect here but the two alleged women you mentioned put me off my feed! I have a friend at work who has slowly been upgrading in the vette dept'
for the last 8 years His next purchase will be a Brand New Vette. He owns a 98 now and while they look good and run Great there is absolutely no room on the passenger side for my size 12's. No vette in my future.
Ed,
I couldn't do it myself, you would need to do some chainsaw work on me, probably, quartering to get me back there.
My daughters' friends will go to the Mall, Pool, Sonic, Putt-Putt and my once a week treat to the Junior High front door. STYLIN'
But anything over 20 minutes is torture so they tell me. Good thing we live in a small town.
When I heal up I'm going to get some friends over at DPS to do a weight and balance on Pattycakes. You are probably pretty close , I'll give you the PRECISE number when I get it.
Keep em' rolling

Dear John:
Sometimes it pays to be short. In my normal city driving position, there is about a foot of leg-room in the seating area behind me. My wife is even shorter, so there's almost 1.5' of leg-room behind her seat. YMMV.
