Post I bought it!

First, I wanted to thank you guys for all the guidance I've had from you, without it I might have made a $10k mistake. My new (to me anyway) shark is at www.thekave.net/928.html if you want to look.

The car is very strong and runs great. I drove 700 miles in it on Sunday from Madison Wisconsin to Lexington KY and she did not give me the first sign of trouble. I'd drive this thing from Atlanta to California if i had to.

Oh man, what a ride. I see what you guys mean now by "long legs on the highway". First 928 I ever drove was an ex college roomate's fathers, but I didn't get to drive it long distances, just short jaunts around town. His was an 80 model auto, mine is an 83 manual.

the car was in better shape that i expected, but also in worse in a few areas. Maintenance records go back for 8 years and 3 previous owners. All is in order. I was a little worried when i found a drivers registration in the glovebox that said 1982, but the VIN and engine number indicate 83.

There were no major surprises, the PO described her to me correctly and listed most everything I found. it's all minor stuff with the interior and a few paint chips on the leading edge of the hood. All electrical systems work as described except I found that the interior lights and the 12v cigarette lighter sockets aren't functioning. didn't have my voltmeter with me to do any trouble shooting so I hope that this isn't a major problem.

Except for the seats, which need to be redone, the interior is in fine shape. only one small crack in the pod, no dash cracks and the leather is just starting to peel a bit in the right top corner. I'll have to fix that.

next thing I'm going to do is become a rennlist member. Thanks again, looking forward to many years of shark fever with you guys.

KBlair! Awsome news! Now the real fun begins. And I'll tell you something that no one else has told you... when you first get your shark, all you can do is think about it and dream about it, and do anything you can to get out there and drive it.

For me, one year later, the feeling has not gone away! In fact, the more I get to know this car, the stronger the feelings get.

Congratulations!

Sounds like the appropriate level of excitement, and I am not in the least surprised. I have had Gretch since 1992 and 10k miles. She still makes my heart beat faster every time is look at her and there is a real rush every time I blow out of a toll gate.

Absoultely no car I have ever driven feels like a 928 GT 5 speed. The torque this car delivers is impressive even in 4th gear, and downright violent in the first 3 gears.

Enjoy, a 928 gets better with age, and the better you treat it the more rewarding the experience will be.

K, Welcome to the club! that's a nice car you have bought. It may need a bit of work (and hey, whose doesn't!) but that just gives you something to do in all those spare evenings you have.... oh and weekends.... and holidays!

Iv'e just had another look at your photo's - what on earth are those speakers on the doors up to? Have you had a look to see how those crates the speakers are in are mounted to the door casing, or are you just going to live with them like that for a while?

Cheers

I got your pictures to load (finally). Nice car. the window tint is not original, but not a bad idea. these things (especially black) are like ovens in the summer. Mine has the two condensers and it still needs to be on the 3rd or 4th blower position to keep the car cool once the temp goes over 85.

I posted a picture of Gretch with the 17" cup wheels in the "Rare Wheels" thread. (later post) Take a look. The black 928's look especially good with these wheels.

Good luck and enjoy.

PS I was taken aback to realize that the '89GT (with an RMB) is producing in excess of 100 more hp. I guess .3 of a liter more displacement, 16 additional valves and the electronics made a significant improvement over the years. Top end is 170mph with a 5.1 sec 0 to 60 if I am not mistaken.

great cars, long term love affair.......

Cool

My total layout including airfair, hotel sunday night, meals and gas was ~$5500. Car was $4800.

the door speakers were added by a stereo shop about 8 years ago. It's a pretty clean install, but I'm just going to live with them for now. Looks like they did not cut the leather behind the speakers, but they did just screw into the door panel with a screw on each corner. The rear speaker install is a very nice job and does not look out of place like the front one. They will come out when I put horns under the dash.

Day 3 and still no problems. How long can this streak last?

Oh, for got to add that on one 300+ mile stretch of intersate only driving at 70mph she got 23MPG. that's about normal right?

A new fuse fixed the cigarette lighter outlets! What a relief.

Well, back in Atlanta now. I've put over 1200 miles on this car since Sunday and she's running great. The long trip shook out a few bugs that were hiding in there, but nothing unexpected. The AC stopped working at one point, but it's working again, was blowing warm air. After the oil pressure sending unit and a check of the Tblet, the AC will be a thourough going through. Gotta have AC in Hotlanta!

KBlair, if you need any help with MX on your car, one of the best 928 mechanics around is in Doraville. The folks at Devek are familiar with him and he is considered to be one of the most knowledgeable 928 mechanics around. His name is Howard Wright and he owns European Classics. 770-409-9246. Enjoy the car!
