Unhappy 84 euro dissapointment..... LINK TO PICS

Well…. I went and looked at the 84 Euro this weekend and it is in pretty dismal shape. At the least it would need a paintjob and a new interior. Apparently it was purchased in Europe and imported. The emissions conversion was a hack job and I’m not quite sure what motor is in it. The only number I was able to find on the motor was M28 and then a few more numbers and digits and the last 2 were 11. It would be a massive undertaking to get this thing to what I would want it to be.

Here’s the pics of the car…

Dismal is not how I would describe that car.

Train wreck, disaster, complete-and-utter-mess are a few descriptives that come to mind.

God, it should be a crime to let a Porsche get to that state.

How much was he asking?

That looks to be a CIS engine. Definitely not an '84 Euro engine. M29/11 would be an '80-'83 Euro engine.

It's in pretty bad shape. I've seen worse. Likely worth more apart than together!

That car looks like sh*t! IT doesn't appear to have the Euro headlights (8") I see on other Euros. Is that common?

Those jumper cables in the back are not a good sign either!

The VIN suggests the car is an 83 so the CIS 300hp engine is correct for this model.

As far as the condition..lets just hope someone rescues it...

Couldn't tell from the pics, but were there side marker light behind the front wheels? At least they used original US side markers when putting it through the import. The 8" H4 lights usually get taken off and replaced with sealed beams during the federalization.

Look for another car, to make it road worthy you will have to spend thousands in money and man hours.

Funny how the climate control is in Farenheit.

I thought the Euros were in centigrade.

BTW, the interior resto. alone would run in excess of $7k. And if the engine is not original, you are wasting your time and money.

I'd run like H.E. double hockey sticks.

Good catch Scott regarding the Climate Control settings/indications.

Although it's an 84 Euro - some things don't appear to add up. I'd be skeptical at best.

The interesting thing about Euros (at least in my eyes) is how different each was "federalized". I have seen some go as far as replacing the fenders so the euro side markers were gone and stock US fenders used. Also cut and spliced rear quarters. Sometimes they left the euro dash..others ..total conversion to US spec including swapping out the climate control. It gets even scarier when you start digging into the ways they made the engine comply with EPA restrictions.....creative engineering at its best...

This car is likely a true euro since it has a plate by the registered importer attached to the door frame as shown in the pics...typically you will see the registered importers name (not the owner but the company that did the work)...Never heard of the one listed here, but you never know..I suspect it was the cars owner and the shop put his name there.

I still think it is worth someone rescueing....maybe not cost effective but you'll have one heck of a car when you are done...

There is a guy here locally doing the same...worse shape, but i have faith he will pull it all together..and he is taking it bit by bit...and not spending a fortune doing it...

Later,
Tom

This is simply not right. Not to compare Porsche 928's to kids but they all need love regardless of their condition. It is a shame cuz they just don't make them (928)anymore. Wonder what a semi-decent shark will go for in about, o'h maybe say another 15 years??? Bet that body be looking pretty good then.

Hi Rilegti:
If I would have known you earlier, I would have sold you our 1984 Euro 928S:
We sold it for $3,000 to a close friend
111,000 miles
Very original--DOT modifications done without, reinforcement bars and front and rear side markers, only cat converter (The car is legal, don't ask me how the auto shop made it legal)
Original German language instrument clusters
Stainless steel headers
The outside looks great,but.......needed:

Air conditioning unit
Timing Belt
Head gaskets because of pinholes in the gasket
Leaking coolant
4 wheel brake job, just had it done but it was done improperly
Leak in the rear differential
No radio, it was not included in the sale
Central locking system not working
Broken sunroof
Air/fuel regulator

Hey Bocky,

Now that is a Euro!...no cheap a$$ tacked on side markers. Skip the rear bumperettes around the rear plate...keep the H4 headlights...and the front Euro fog and driving lights...
Your friend got a steal of a deal...I believe you can get at the heads without removing the engine....Man...Hope your friend is ressurecting it ?

One of these days I'll get an original unmolested Euro to play with....

Tom

too bad you didn't have any pictures of the hack job they did on the emissions, I've become quite a connoisseur of that kind of thing lately. I'd be kind of curious as to why an importer would go through the obvious expense and effort to replace the body panels with US versions then do a lousy job fixing the emissions.

TMM: Yeah, we really loved the car, kinda cried when we sold it, but my son got stuck on the bridge then again in another city 100 miles away , so it was time to let a "professional" takeover, our friend owns an automotive mechanic shop so it is in good hands. Still crying
But my son is much happier in his '02 Carrera C2 coupe, and I feel more secure that he won't get stuck on the bridge.

FLINT:
That was the only thing we couldn't get away with, the EPA was really strict about the cat converter and smog certificate. We did keep the original headers, but added the stainless steel headers later. There was a vacuum thing attached to the front exhaust pipe, then about 2 foot toward the back is the cat converter. Then straight back to the rear muffler.
Otherwise everything else on the car was ORIGINAL, and not molested.

BTW, I am on the 996 forum and there is a lot of dicussion about a 928 revival, using the 450 hp turbo charged engine code named 998 in 2005 or a "Mystery GT in 2006"
If it is true I will be standing in line for the 450 hp turbo charged GT.

Happy Motoring
