Buy a cheap bank repo or lease return at a public auto auction, drive it every day, and take care of your shark as you have time and money....

Well, that's what I've been doing and would do again.

I would keep the porsche and consider the audi for sale in the member classifieds. There is something to be said for a nice sporty practical sedan.
I really wish the car listed above was for sale back in the fall when I was in the market for a company car (dd). I ended up with a Volvo S80 and for what I paid it is a great car, but I am sure I would be happier with a "performance" sedan such as the Audi.

I would not trade my 928 for anything, UNLESS..... it were my only source of transportation. I dont like putting my 14 year son the back seat, I cant imagine trying to wedge my father back there.
IMHO you need to do something, I just hope you save the shark.

I am in sort of the same boat.. paint and interior are really show their age and I am wondering what to do as well.. I know this is a difficult question as there are so many variables. But for your standard factory type paint job and assuming there is little or no body work that needs to be done.. Whats a ball park figure of a paint job? I'm figuring around $4K. That seem fair?

Perry,

This is only a question that you can answer!

As far as getting money out of our cars that we put in, "we aint going to get $#%T back in return". Our cars are not "investments" for sure. If you want to make money, go buy a Hemi Cuda, Late 50's T-Bird, old muscle car, etc. You get the drift.

The 928 is an awesome car to all of us here on rennlist, etc, but most of us are able to afford them because to others, (outsiders, those much less educated )they are not highly coveted automobiles. Sucks for our cars value, but good for us! For instance, I bought the SilverBulit for about $4k back in 1995, I've probably put another $20k into it over 12 years, but I probably couldn't pull more than $10k out of it if I put it up for sale. To me, it is priceless!!! To others, not so much. Maybe one day this will change, but for now, it's reality.

I say if you love your car like a lot of us here love our cars, do what you want. Put the $ into the car (if that's what you want). If you plan on making it a car that you think you'll never get rid of, go for it. If you think you're going to eventually sell it and get a different model year, or a 5 speed, or whatever, then don't The 928 is an AWESOME blank canvas on which to start with, and the sky is the limit for sure. Look at what Sterling is doing!!!

I'm sure that if you decide to go for it, and you rolled up a year from now at the 2009 OCIC here in Dallas with new paint, new seats, etc. and you had a $#%T eating grin on your face, everyone attending would definately say, "Dude, it was SO worth it".

Best of luck in whatever you decide!!

I still say (and will continue to do so until proven wrong) that in a couple of years when the 2 door Panemara comes out, our cars will experience a resurgence in value. Whether it is significant or not will remain to be seen.

Thanks for the overwhelming input. I am definately leaning toward keeping the 928 since I bought it to keep forever. I do however want it as a second car and not a daily driver. Guess it is time to get some paint quotes and find someone who can do the seats. I will keep this updated as I make decisions.

NickT--A really good paint job is likely closer to 10k and I have known people who spent far more than that. I am hoping for around 5k with the expectation it will cost closer to 7.5k

Well I kind of looked at the whole thing differently. My last car needed new paint and interior to meet my standards and I really contemplated doing it. But the more I considered the cost and the fact that the paint may not meet my standards without spending some serious money I started changing my mind. The other downside was that I wasn't overly attached to the car so it made my decision easier. All I needed was a nudge to push me over the edge.

Have you considered selling and buying another in the condition you want? Sorry to throw another option out there.

Mechanicals are up to date, just need shocks at this point. That is another reason for keeping it, because I know whats been done to her.

My problem is champagne tastes ( no pun intended) but a beer budget. I really want another XJR and there are two XJR100's for sale right now I'd love to get hold of. Just can't afford to hold on to one if i get the other. I am just trying to figure out how to have both without going into debt.

If I do spend the $$ on the 928 it will be because I love the car and know full well I will never see it again.
If you do spend the money, you will see it every day. If you want an affordable sedan, how about a 96-99 M3 ? Still rated as one of the top driver's cars of the last 20 years, and available for reasonable dosh.

Don't think I would risk buying another 928, took it in the wallet on this one and it was a one owner car with only 60k on the clock and I had a PPI done on it by a known 928 guy in Beverly Hills. Can't afford to start over again.

M3 is a great car...but another possible money pit. I am seriously looking at a short term lease on a new car, good A/C, no maintenance and a warranty. I might go certified if I can find something that catches my eye. Still thinking about all of this though.

Perry,

I got a pretty dang good paint job about 8 or 9 years ago for $2750ish. I bought the leather seat recovering kit for $1000 and had it installed for like $200 (or less, I don't really remember now) and had the dash and all the other front end stuff either recovered or redyed and all total it was less than $7k. This was all on my '81 928. I paid $4k (or was it $4500???) for the car in '98 and it has 143,000 miles on it. I still need to do a recover on the rear seats, but other than that I am REALLY, REALLY happy with the car. It is a ton of fun to drive (the early cars have better balance and less understeer with factory settings than the later cars) so I would not sell the thing for $10k. Of course it would be unlikely I could even GET $10k for it and I have $11k into it...

Just saying I think your spend of $10k might be a bit high (especially if you really look around) and while you won't get all that money back out of the car, they sure are a lot of fun!

Oh, HEY EVERYBODY! I just thought I would come back over to the 928 Rennlist Forum and get signed up and say "hi" to you all again and see if I can get back into the 928 swing of things!

Had a GREAT track morning yesterday in the GT car! Ran awesome and the track was SUPER COOL! It was my first time on this new track in San Marcos and it was GREAT!

Best to you all!

I don't want to take over this post about the OPs car, but I want to say something about paint jobs. I've been around cars and painting for a while, and maybe my advice will be of some value. There is a huge, giant difference between a $1800 paint job and a $3000 paint job. First, the materials for most of these cars are around $1000, so that leaves $800 for labor. Obviously, you're not gonna get much sanding, prepping, taping and cleanup for $800.

IMO, when you get up to about $2000 in labor, if you're at an independent shop this works out to 40 hours @ $50/hour. That's a decent wage for a decent body man. for this, you can get a nice workmanlike paint job if the guy is reasonably competent. 40 hours is five full eight hour days. Most body men don't put in eight hours on one car during the day. There is set up time, curing time, and some other stuff that has to be done.

From here, you work up incrementally to the $6000 range, then the $10,000 range and finally the body off rotisserie jobs. The difference in the $3000 and $6000 is visible to the carefully trained eye. The difference in the $6000 to $10k job is not visible until you start opening hood, tailgate, doors, etc. If you're getting $10k of body work and paint, that's pretty close to a factory job, with the full disassembly of all panels, suspension strip, and detail painting behind and around all partially visible underbody areas(think the engine bay, and hatch surround).

Things to do that will keep your bill down, or get you a much better paint job. Remove the bumpers, and loosen the mirrors so they pop off the doors. Remove the wing/spoiler, wipers, hood, windshield bezel, and A pillar door trim. If you want to go the extra mile, remove the rub strips, and the plastic trim around the fenders and rocker panel. Plan on putting all that stuff back on yourself. This is dumb work that the body man has to do at $50/hour, or you can do it for a few hours of time.

Buy the best materials you can get. The cost of bad materials vs good materials will be made up in the 4th through 15th year easily. Poor paint will chalk up, dull, and fade in a few years. What ever your body man suggests as the best he uses is probably a good plan.

So, I would say for a DIY guy, that can pull and put the trim pieces himself, wants a decent, but not show paint job, it should cost between $3-6k at an independent body shop. Of course, add 25% in CA/NY areas, and if there is a fair amount of body work to do add that time in according to the hours set by the body man.

I've had horrible paint jobs, because I didn't watch the work carefully. I've had good paint jobs that weren't terribly expensive that last quite well. Once you get the car back, you can also do a heck of a lot with a detail gun and some left over paint. Most guys won't want to get involved in it due to the investment in chemicals, gun, cleaning stuff, sanding, and buffing stuff, tools, and training. That's my experience.

Thanks Doc...I hoping to use a guy that comes highly recommended by an after market modifier who uses him all the time for his custom work. I have seen his work and it looks nice.

I agree with the stages of paint costs. Just depends on what you hope to achieve. At a point though you are just paying for bragging rights as to who did the work.

"IF" you decide to do the repaint...be sure to get a GOOD painter.....a crappy repaint is FAR worse than faded stock paint...but your cars been repainted once already right?

Another ???? is your 928 clear coated or is in a single stage paint, that black, red, dunkle blau and white usually are? The reason I ask is the single stage paints are in theory easier to polish back to life....a skilled detailer can improve paint quite a bit....sure it might cost $500 if it takes them a while to do it, but it can be done....try the concours forum and ask for MoeMistry...he is in the LA area and knows what he is doing....have him look at your car in person to give you a quote on what he thinks....he might be able to save it?

Quick Reply: is it worth it to spend 10k on my car?
