Post New window guides, but still not great

Well, I thought I did the right thing by installing new Porsche felt window guides (no Orchard Supply homebrew felt on my car, thank you very much). I am concerned how tight they are.

I undestand that new guides take a while to "break in". I attempted to accelerate this process a bit by squashing the guides in a vise prior to installation, but they are still incredibly tight, so much so, they bow the door ledge out a bit at the mid point of travel. I set the guides as far inboard as possible when tightening, too. And now, a new surprise after the Devek road trip, my driver's side glass is scratched on the outside, small vertical gouges at the guide positions.

My theory now is that the worn guides let crud fall into the gap and embed in the outer seal, which is now so tight, the particles in it are scratching the glass!

Also, the windows are still not very tight. My guide post is tight inside the door, so what's left...let's see, the roller guide that sits in the horizontal channel and the arm on the motor itself. I have new nylon rollers (ordered a long time ago for fun), but don't think it'll be worthwhile to replace them as the motor itself does not seem very precise. If you hold the glass while lowering via the motor, there is significant play vertically - if you let go of the glass, it drops down a bit with a *thunk*. The nylon horizontal mounting piece that slides along the guide post with the glass, even if I replaced it, would not affect this behavior. Is there any benefit to replacing this? In fact, the guides are so tight, they hold the passenger side up a bit at the midpoint of travel, after which, the window drops down.

Sheesh, my windows were in better shape before I started all this. Any ideas as to how to improve my window action?

Dan,
I think MAJROSS on the 928OC public list did his windows last month... check archives there and here.
As I recall he had some problems and eventually explained the adjustment procedure and all those nylon/plastic blocks.
Good luck!

Dan,

I recently redid the guts on my driver's window as well and just a coupla things pop to mind.

1. The plastic guides on the vertical tube are supposed to be tight. Really tight. Like remove the window motor and you still have to give it a good push to get the window down kinda tight. Mine were mucho worn out, but my car has 160K - yours may be better.

2. There are 2 guides on the tube. One is easy to see/access. The other requires a bit more finess (if the window is up). If memory serves, they are both adjustable (YMMV) so, perhaps that is causing part/all of your issue.

3. You may also want to check the window seal(the rearmost part of the door that the window travels) is also covered in fake fur.
If it has worn down to the rubber, it may be causing the window to hang up.

4. I'm sure you did this already, but check all the bolts in the door for tightness.

5. Clean all your electrical connections while you're in there. The window motor needs a fair amount of juice to function properly.

6. If you have access to the factory manuals, you may want to check out VOL V, SEC 57 for the window adjusting procedure.

HTH,

Greg
