Post Copper wire inside airbox

Can anyone tell me what this copper wire is doing in my intake box? If I'm lucky this is all that has happened. I'll find out what this mess is all about after pulling things apart, but would like some experienced thoughts.

This is weird. It appears to be some kind of gross filter. Coming from the oil filler cup is a breather-like hose that connects to the airbox. The twisted wire is holding in place the birdsnest of fine copper wire. Geez. What could it possibly be for? To keep those pesky oilfish from swimming into the air intake? Actually, copper wire that size probably wouldn't do the engine much harm.
This car s in perfect shape. New wheel bearings, new rack and pinion. Darn, there's nothing to do except drive it. Can't, until the oil filter arrives...Patience is soooo difficult. Especially after hearing some of the sound files of this engine. Damn what a great sounding car. Oh, new stainless exhaust too. Disgusting!

So what's worse, having copper wire go into the intake or a backflash? Hmmm. Any thoughts on what to do now that it's doing what it's doing? And Jim, I just ordered a bunch of goodies. You guys have a great website.
Thanks y'all.
