Post Transmission - CV Problems

While back I picked up a new (used) axle shaft and installed it with no problem. Everything spunn correctly and nicely. Well, this story does not have a nice ending.

I let my girlfriend drive my shark to do some errands and upon return she said - I think theres something wrong with your transmission. My heart dropped and mouth went dry.

After lifting the car up - I found out that the knuckle in place shredded and the circular object which holds the bearings in place broke in two. Amazing bnut all bearings were still in the shaft.

The shafts itself is in tact and so is the sleeve which holds the bearings. I figured - OK - New knuckle and circular peice - Rebuild no problem.

What I am truly concerned about is the transmission. I started the car, while lifted, and put into drive - the tranny engaged as it should but ........... I depressed the brake and went to put the car into park.

I heard a sound that is like nails against a chalkboard. The tranny gave this awfull ratchet sound until it stopped spinning - Me being me, I thought maybe it was a one time thing but ... it happened again.

Give it to me straight Doc - Is my tranny toast?.

What would be the reason for the knuckle shredding?. I personally think I got a hold of a bad (used) part.

Wally, anybody - Please ease my worries or just give it to me straight.

PS - Can't blame it on the girlfriend - I Don't want to sleep on the couch tonight.

Red face

I don't make it a habit of replying to myself but - The tranny is beyond my control. It's going to the shop (Sun Valley Imports - Tempe AZ).

I am really worried about the transmission being burnt but ....... I love my Shark and she's worth having fixed correctly by a Certified Porsche Tech. If she does need a tranny rebuild - Does anyone know what the ballpark is on such a repair?. I'm I better off finding a used one and replacing it rather than a rebuild?. Financial point of view?.

Question

Drewster,
The immediate question that comes to my mind, as you didn't describe the entire sequence to my satisfaction, is this; When you put the shift lever into "Park", had you first put the brakes on, to stop the rotation of the wheels? If you didn't, what you may have heard, was the detent, that locks the tranny from rotating the driveshaft(s), skipping over it's lock point?
Maybe others will have a different point of veiw, or questions?

Hey Brett.

Yes I did hit the brakes prior to placing her in Park. But it does sound like what you described. Is this "mechanical" aspect adjustable?.

Thanks

Hey Drewster, I'm hoping the best for you. I had transmission problems last fall and it was $2500 for it to be rebuilt.

With the axle removed there is not load on the transmission, the noise is the park gear ratcheting since the transmission is turning. All is well. The cage was probably defective. (Bad axle)

Drewster,
I only have experienced this "problem", I have no idea if it is adjustable. Been inside of many bike tranny's, have yet to be inside of an auto's....
Ya know, life IS a learning experience, right?! And I learned this "phenomenon" long ago.
