Cool Rearview mirror

It seems the hot sun of North Hollywood had a bit to do with my rearview mirror making a run for it and hiding under the passenger seat. Now all I have is a little circle of glue on my windshield. My last garage charged me $38 parts and labor to put is back on when I got the car (I have a new mechanic now). Is there a cheaper way to do this my self. What kind of glue are you guys using for this problem. And do I have to remove the old glue? Thanks in advance...

Your local parts store should sell a kit to reinstall the mirror. It should include the adhesive, primer, applicator and instructions. A razor blade is used to remove the old adhesive.

You need to carefully remove all of the old adhesive. Once you do this, you don't know where to put the mirror ....

Use a crayon, tape or marker to put a spot on the outside of the windshield at the correct location before you take the old adhesive off.

Thumbs up

Good advice Wally. The package that I bought, had this advice on it as well. And it cost a heck of a lot less than $38! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Ok, I got the kit all is in order except I cannot remove the button from the rearview mirror. Either I am doing something wrong or the shop was careless with the adhesive. Any ideas? I don't think is is a good idea to attach the mirror in one shot...

It can be difficult - it usually will tap out with a piece of wood and a small hammer.

Last time it was repaired, there was probably more then the prescribed "one drop" of glue put on the mounting disc (ask me how I know). The glue will squeeze out from under the disc and hinder the smooth replacement of the mirror mount. Use ONE DROP and no more. That stuff is like concrete and there is nowhere for the excess glue to go but out.

If you do tap it, make sure you tap lightly with shearing blows. Do not tap directly on the top of the mirror mount or mounting plate. Always come at it from the sides and be gentle. No, I didn't crack my windshield - hehehehe.

Cheers

My understanding is that you need to be very careful here. Too much pressure (from the inside)will cause the windshield to crack.

What I can't tell you is how much is too much?
