Paul, can you comment on my questions? I was not asking about cost, although Robb Bud charges quite a bit more for Alcantara than leather. You already told me that you aren't taking any new orders. What I need to know is whether the Alcantara will hoild up in the sun.
Thanks
Thanks
Shawn,
as you know first hand, I'm not commenting here in an effort to get orders. I'm just trying to set the record straight. I'm just tired of hearing people quote things that are simply not true.
As for your question, Alcantara is supposed to be UV protected. In my view, that as more to do with color fading than anything else. Alcantara on a dash will not stop the heat from the core, but as a man made material, the cover itself should remain stable. The texture will also cut the reflection.

I don't feel that is "quite a bit more" but in line with what the market will bear while limiting the loss.
There are leathers that sell for more than Alcantara and vice versa but as a general rule I respectfully disagree with Paul. The cost for good quality leather is less than Alcantara. I believe it to be true and anyone concerned can quote me on it.
As far as holding up to the sun, Alcantara will hold up to fading and shrinking much better than leather. But as Paul mentions the core of the dash will still get very hot. The substrate must be in good condition and stand up to the temperature extremes.

Former Vendor
I stand by what I said. Current dealer prices on Alcantara is about $7 a square foot. Porsche leather as per GAHH for example is about $7.25 a s.f.
So Rob, either you have an excellent source for Porsche spec leather, or you need to look for a better one on Alcantara.
