New to the list, about to take the plunge. Was wondering if possible to validate model info based on VIN. Thought I once read it was possible but can't find my way back to whatever that link may have been (should have bookmarked it I guess).
For anybody who might be able to tell

Any help is appreciated.

Try this,
<a href="http://www.928s4vr.com/codes.htm" target="_blank">http://www.928s4vr.com/codes.htm</a>
928SP also has some good info on their website, <a href="http://www.928gt.com" target="_blank">www.928gt.com</a> Click on Tips then on Spec Info.

The major options that came with the 87 US model are:
sport seats, seat heating, lumbar support, memory seats, alarm, leather, Limited slip, extended hub, HO air, sport shocks.
There is not an SE by name, maybe it has sport seats and shocks?
I would have a concern if he is calling it an SE, probably does not know his 928s or maybe he means S4

It is an S4, but he believed it was 'sub-model' SE (which I think may be related to the CS)
I drove the car yesterday. Validated that all VINs match between doors, front windshield and under hood.
The wheels match the 'CS' as found at site <a href="http://www.928.org.uk/wheels.html" target="_blank">http://www.928.org.uk/wheels.html</a>
The car has options
018: Sports Steering Wheel with Elevated Hub -30mm
158: Radio "Monterey" - 86 "Reno" - 87
220: Locking Differential - 40%
302: Type designated on rear end
383: Sport Seat Left, Electrical Vertically Adjustable
387: Sport Seat Right, Electrical Vertically Adjustable
418: Side Protection Moldings
474: Shock Absorber (SPORTING) Front and Rear
481: 5 speed manual transmission
490: Sound System
494: Additional Amplifier
533: Anti-Theft Device
650: Electrical Sliding Roof
900: Tourist delivery (and I've seen the Bahn stickers and stamps to show that it was picked up over there)
Everything is original except air filter.
I find very few references about the "SE" model, other than it was a more 'creature comfort' version of the "CS".
Any help in figuring this one out is much appreciated.
Daniel

From some memory--
The SE is a keep-the-comforts version of the CS made exclusively for GB market. Seems the factory figured that there was a specific market for a car that was lightened (the CS) but still shipped with AC and a radio. It was only sold in the GB market, and would therefore be a right-hand-drive car at minimum.
Again, from some memory.

I just checked Phil's site again (www.928s4vr.com) to see where else I could learn what options my car had been equipped with. No sticker. No warranty manual. Nothing about it in owners manual. What else can I do to find out? I seem to vaguely recall reading something about getting a copy of the original sticker from the factory based on vin. Am I really remembering this or is it wishful thinking? If someone else has seen this, let me know please and where.
Thanks!
Thanks!

Was checking out some of the rennlist member sites and came across a piece of info that I am still trying to validate:
<a href="http://home.attbi.com/~87928s4/928history.htm" target="_blank">http://home.attbi.com/~87928s4/928history.htm</a>
I quote:
"928S4
Further uprated from the 4-valve 928S2. The S4 got a beautiful nose and tail bumpers and a larger black rear wing. The V8 employed larger valves, faster cam profile and a 2-stage variable length induction manifold with resonance effect. Power and torque rose to 320 hp and 317 lbft respectively. Drag coefficient dropped to 0.34.
Porsche now called the manual version as 928 S4 SE, leaving the "928S4" label to the automatic version that comprised the majority of sales. Meanwhile, a lighter-weight, tauter-tuned, 330 hp version called "928 GT" appeared as the hottest S4. There were two specialty version mainly for the British market; an 88 with reduced weight and GT cames called a S4 CS (Club Sport). Also, a reduced weight but with more accessories was called a S4 SE"

Gregory,
That item you mentioned... is it different from the Porsche Certificate you can order or is it the same thing. I ordered one from PCNA and though it looks cool and has my car's options listed, they could not give me any information on pricing (it's an 1989 S4) and I would really love to have a copy of the car's original sticker. By the way, where would I find this listed on 928 Specs. website ? Thanks
Rob

I believe there's an option code for the Club Sport wheels (which an SE would have). The option is "Forged Wheels, 8X16 and 9x16" or some such thing.
This car doesn't have it, so the CS wheels must have been added later.
Has nice options, though. Sport shocks, limited slip, sport seats. The CS (not sure on the SE) has special springs and exhaust too.

Option codes may or may not mean much on a 928. The option codes tell you what "standard" options were installed on your car - perhaps. I have seen more that were incomplete than were complete.
In addition, some options include other options - for example, I would expect an SE to have the Club Sport wheels, but i would not expect to see them listed separately on the options. There would probably be several other items that might be standard adds or deletes for the SE that wouldn't show up on any list.
And finally, Porsche would pretty well custom build you a 928 - and those custom additions and changes would NOT be listed on any option list.
And then there were the dealer options...
