Just curious... I search the site for an answer but to many hits to go one by one to see if someone has covered this in the past...
Again, just curious to know why the call them sharks?

Although a recent convert to 928's I'll do my best ot answer this one. Others may have a more appropriate answer.
The frontal appearance of the 928 taken at the proper perspective has the appearance of a shark. The long nose (more on that), the dropped headlights as eyes and the under the bumper grill provide that necessary features to approximate a shark.
I ran into a Brazilain mechanic who remarked to me about the 928 having the nickname of "long nose" in his home country. Seems the car piled up some impressive wins there back in the 80's.

Ill agree with Gordon -
If you look at the 928s front fender - It's shape reflects that of a shark. Mainly, the gradual decline in width (height) when moving forward, coming to a "peak" at the nose.

I grew up in Lebanon where the BMW 635 CSI was nicknamed shark...the nose on that car is so far forward that it is sure to hit a garage wall long before the bumper does...not a city car if you plan on nudging a couple of cars for parking in a tight spot...additionally, the rear (straight) edge lines of the BMW 635 are more similar to a shark than our bubbly 928...
...anyway, I love and owned both...they're both sharks to me

I think I posted this a couple of years ago. At the time, I had a Venetian Blue '87S4.
I was going to pick up a friend to go have lunch. She knew I had gotten a Porsche, but didn't know much other than that.
After she got in the car, her comment was, "This car is wicked. It looks just like a shark coming around the corner. I just knew it was you!"
She had no prior knowledge that I had bought a 928, much less that it is fondly referred to as a shark!
So while I can't provide any historical factoid that relates 928's to sharks, this is an absolutely true, unsolicited, unbiased and totally innocent reaction to seeing a 928!! <img src="graemlins/burnout.gif" border="0" alt="[burnout]" />

Thought I'd toss in my 2 cents worth...
If you've ever watched "Shark Week" on Discovery Channel, you've undoubtedly seen a great white feeding. Those glassy eyes roll back as they consume their prey. That always reminds me of a 928's headlights.
Plus, I think, the 928 from the front is vaguely reminiscent of the Mako Shark (whatever happened to that?) which, in turn, is vaguely reminiscent of a real shark...
Cheers

Tarek- point of trivia to ponder: The BMW style that existed from the 60's up until approximately the mid '90's was actually based upon....the lowly chevrolet corvair! It seems BMW's stylists were highly impressed by the styling of gm's dangerous competition for the VW type 1 [beetle]...
