Cool Defining the word "rare".....

Just wanted to get your thoughts on this.
I see the word being used in auctions on Ebay, in classifieds and other places. most of the time, they are 5-speeds and that's why they are "rare". The feeling I get is that the owners are trying to drive up the price by tacking the word "rare" to the ad.

I've read here and other places that only about 20% of 928s ever produced were 5-speeds. Is there any official rundown of the production? I've seen the total numbers year-by-year somewhere, seem to remember that 1983 was about 5000 units total, 2500 US. so 20% would be about 500. Of those, say 20%? were black = 100. of those, 50% had full leather = 50. knock off half that number for accidents/attrition and you are left with 25 cars like the one I'm buying.

One the one hand, I'm thinking that ALL 928s could be considered rare when compared to say the Corvette. On the other, there seems to be a good supply of cars for sale of any given year except for the GT models, Weissachs and later GTS models.

so, if anybody has the full production numbers broken down by transmission and year, etc, let me know.

KBlair,

Check out the 928 Specialist web site - under "Tips/Links" & then "Evolution" DR has some stats on sales (I don't think they correlate directly to model year, seems more like sales data by calendar year since there are some 1996 GTS's listed).

It does not have breakout by transmission type.

I think overall 20% may be a bit low for manuals, although its clear most were auto's by a good margin.

Anyone else have any data, real or anecdotal on this? (seems like a few months check of whats for sale would give a pretty good idea...?)

Cool

Hey K. Did you pick up you car? I remember reading the 14th, but can't be sure. Good question with this but I don't even think Porsche compiled a detailed list. I could be wrong, but outside of an option study, must companies don't record every option for every car. I think on the cars that offer many options they run percentages to make option packages to reduce assembly/manufacturing costs. Since the 928 had very select options it figures this info wouldn't be pursued too heavily. BTW, this is all speculation, it would be interesting to see the results.

So did you get your car? <img src="graemlins/yltype.gif" border="0" alt="[typing]" />

No Greggg, I haven't gotten the car yet. I'm picking it up Sunday. Only 84 more hours to go!

can't remember where I read the 20% figure on manuals, but i thought it was a little low as well.

KBlair, I saw your post regarding the car bra. I live in Atlanta as well and recently had GTS mirrors put on my '89 GT. You are more than welcome to use the mirror bras since I no longer have a need for them. Send me an e-mail if you want to use them.

KBlair, are you asking about fitting GTS mirrors on your car or the bras. I have bras that fit the original mirrors on my '89 GT which I believe are the same mirrors on the 928 you are picking up and bras for the GTS mirrors I am having installed. I believe the mirrors on your car and the originals on my GT are the same. May be someone can clarify this for us.

I believe you would have to add mirror switches on your '83 but, you can add the GTS mirrors. Get a catalog from Devek if you do not have one.

Cool

I was told by several 928 gurus the percentage of AT 928s was about 70%.

I doubt with a total production run of about 60k cars would make even the 30% which are 5-speeds "rare".

Also, although I don't know for sure, I would guess that more than 50% of all 928s are still being driven. That means that there are at least 10,000 5-speed 928s (and with that many, I don't think they qualify as being "rare"). YMMV.

You could always try that custom-for real- clear poly-vinyl on the Devek site, they have partial and complet kit.
FWIW
I know some guy's in the West Texas Old timers Club who use that clear poly-vinyl that you buy as shelf paper. Self adhesive.
They use it when going on long runs or to shows - which they do quite often-.
When they get where they are going they remove it and use light liquid wax.
BTW
These guy's put an enormous amount of money into thier Hot Rods so it seems to me this is an option for you.
HTH
Don't ask me how? I was reading Kblair's post on bra's, posted reply, it disappeared. While browsing found it here...sorry.

Randy, Brett,
Thanks - I thought it was cool too.

It is actually a picture of my car from the top of a building while at AZ-PCA's Phoenix Flight XXIV Concours at Scottsdale AZ last Nov. Of course it didn't look quite like this until I 'solarized' in Photoshop... It came out like this first time.

Its clear you can get more real estate with a portrait style avatar. John Dunkle kindly (and very quickly) implemented my request for the "big kahuna-tar"

KB: Yes they are engaging in hype, but then the '94 only had 100 5-speeds total in US, and not many are changing hands yet or are now in second owner and not changing yet. The 60K total is somewhat misleading because an unknown, but not insignificant number have bitten the dust, or are not being cared for and therefore are or will soon be parts cars. Since what we're talking about here indirectly is price, we need also to look to the economy. The harder it is for people to care ($$) for their cars, the faster the number dwindles. But a healthy economy will bid the cars up. Go figure. Lastly, I just got my Waldorf=Astoria Salon catalogue and there is only one P-car, a 356, but there is a Ford Fairlane, and a customized Camaro and some Doge Hemi. Now these are creampuffs, but they don't belong in this sale. But they are collectible to some. Go figure again.
