Post Wiring repair

Hello,

I was noticing that my wiring going across the top of the engine has deteriorated significantly since new. Lots of ugly blue powder where some of my wires used to be, so I think I will attempt re-doing that whole section.

Does anyone have info about this?

I am looking at one of Nichol's Tips and it helps some. Most of the wires in that section no longer have a color, so it will be a bit confusing. Also there is no mention of guages.

What guage wire should I use?
I have the manuals, is there some specific section that gives all of that info handily? (I haven't found it yet)

your manual set doesn't have wiring diagrams?

you won't really need to know the colors, but you'll need to know what the wires go to and where to find it on the diagrams. then you can get the wire gauge. they're in mm's, so here's a close conversion:

0.50mm = 24 GA
0.75mm = 20 GA
1.00mm = 18 GA
1.25mm = 16 GA
1.50mm = 14 GA
2.00mm = 12 GA
4.00mm = 6 GA
6.00mm = 2 GA

Jim,
The wires around the engine has relatively short lifetime due to the heat from the engine.
I think better to buy/install a complete new set of wires for the engine - It starts from the connector on the right bonnet, where you have the
power take off.
This set is not so costly, and you will be safe

David,
Yes my manuals have the electric diagrams, but I was having trouble reading them. Now I know that those T's, with super and sub scripts, are connectors, and that helps a bit. Thanks for the guage transformations.

Erik,
I didn't look into buying the wires because of a tip saying that they were >$1000(A little much for just some wires). But after looking on 928intl's site it seems they are not so expensive. Thanks for the heads up, I'll look into it.

Jim, just an FYI - the older model years had only one main wiring harness, as opposed to the later models ('84 on I believe) that had two separate harnesses.

If you are planning on replacing the harness on your '79, you'll have to buy the complete set that has connections from the fuse/relay board to all electrical systems - a real wiring challenge.
