How to pull oil pump?

I've found one thread where they rigged up a piece of metal bar with three holes, the center has the oil pump shaft through it and shaft bolt holding it on, the two outside holes centered over the face of the block near the pump perimeter, long bolts through the two outside holes up against the face of the block so turning the outside bolts pulls the pump from it's hole.
Is the shaft of the pump and whatever is inside attached to it capable of withstanding this force?
Right now my shaft is showing no sign of lateral movement but you can pull it out and push it in approximately one or two millimeters with a discernible clicking sound at both ends of the movement. Is this normal?
I've tried pulling the pump out by hand, tapping the protruding 'hub' portion of its face from multiple angles with a rubber mallet, not very hard, and even used two pairs of pliers to simultaneously pull on opposing pieces of the cast face of the pump...no joy.
It moves slightly in and out but barely, no sign that it is going to 'walk' out before the joints in my elbows wear out....
If I knew it was in so tight I would have just done the shaft seal and left well enough alone but now I wonder if my efforts have compromised the O ring and so now I must finish what I started.
Also, are the small rubber rings on the three pump bolts re-usable?
Thanks, Craig

Craig,
I am expecting my "0" ring in any day now and was waiting on it to arrive before I pulled my pump.
From all I have read (including WSM) I have not seen this problem disucssed. I know it can be a problem on the reinstall with the "O" ring.
I hope someone helps us out here??

I don't know how much you have stripped down, but when i had to do this I put the cam gear back on and used a little pry-bar and alternated prying form 2-3 points. Not too hard. Wiggle, wiggle, pop!
Make sure you get three long bolts to act as a guide for re-installation. I killed my new o-ring because it got pinched. You may also want to get some engine assembly lube to lube the gears and the o-ring. It dissolves in oil.
Oh... and I reused the rubber o-rings on the bolts.

Andrew, I read about your O ring adventure that's why I'm being careful, I just got back from picking up some long 8mm bolts to make my guide studs out of.
I'm planning to lube the oil pump internals with STP oil treatment and the best I've found for the O rings is either dielectric grease or some engine assembly lube.
I guess I'll try the prying gently against the sprocket method, that sounds like it might do the trick although lateral pressure can't be good for it. I just wanted some confirmation that the oil pump shaft can be used to pull the pump free without hurting the shafts connection to the pump internals.
Received my Torque Converter yesterday, Torque Tube today, and my intake...etc. was shipped from the powder coater today.

It seems like I have been cleaning for a year! Never knew there was so much dirt, scum, and grease in my engine/engine area. I am really ready to get started seeing it go back together.
