Red face automatic transmission on the blink

The automatic transmission in my 1982 is behaving badly . Can anyone recommend a transmission shop in Southern California? I live in the SF Valley. Your assistance is appreciated.

It will probably be difficult to find a transmission shop familiar with the 928. An independent Mercedes Benz shop would be a possibility, since the transmission is basically a Mercedes unit.

Even better would be for you to become familiar with the external workings of the transmission, and perhaps solve the problem yourself. Much cheaper, much more satisfactory.

Spend some time on the Nichols site at http://www.nichols.nu/tips.htm , and do somne serious searches on this site.

Isn't Devek in SF? if so that's where I'd go. What are the symptoms? My 82 has a tranny leak, so when it starts to "rumble" just before a shift, I crawl under theere and put more juice in. (about once/2 weeks.)

When the level is low, it won't shift if cold, slips, and is slow to downshift when you hit the button under the accel. pedal. Sound familiar? - Ruf

"Mercedes Benz shop would be a possibility, since the transmission is basically a Mercedes unit."

Which I've been meaning to ask...what mercedes transmission is it basically? I know money can be saved by ordering filters/gaskets for that model Mercedes, instead of for our 928's. Anyone?

"Isn't Devek in SF?"

They are in San Fransisco. I think he meant San Fernando.

Sorry, Larry, but I don't know. Maybe these guys can help?

Cool

Thanks everybody for all the suggestions and ideas. I am in the San Fernando Valley. There is a independent MBZ shop, that has a very good reputation. I'll drop by one of these days. Does anyone know which MBZ transmission we have?

>> for these vintage cars ... same as the AT in the S-Class. They'll know it when they see it.

Good luck!

I know the automatic transmission in the 928 is the same as the one in a Mercedes, but I know nothing about Mercedes cars. Do they also have the transmission in the back with a torque tube? Is the differential the same in the two cars? Could the differential and ring and pinion gears be interchanged between the two? I'm wondering if there might be some Mercedes limited slip differentials with better gearing out there that would fit in the 928.

Larry,
All 928 3speed A 22 are Mercedes Benz 450 SEL, SL and SLC transmissions, type 722.004. Porsche designation is 722.005. What is on the blink?

Masco,

The transmissions in your 87 300D (722.317) is the same type used in the 928 4speed
(A28)AT

You can not install a MB transmission in a 928, there are some Porsche specific parts, A22, 3speeds and A28 4speed; the tails are different, as well as the cases, the output shaft is made for the differential pinion gear), governor and valve body are calibrated to the 928s

Pete,
MBs have a drive shaft with the transmission bolted to the engine and the differential in the rear. The ring and pinion are not interchangeable. Yea it would be a great up grade if some one can fine a way to use a different rear.

Larry,
Sorry I did not follow up to your question, as I just found this post again. If you mean willow springs on the weekend of the 21st-22nd, I hope to be able to make Sunday. Not a big deal for me, since I am maybe three miles from there. Depends on the wife's plans.

Steve,

Thanks for the info! I was not aware that my the '87 Diesel tranny was the same guts as my shark. I knew there was no way in hell to swap with the mercedes equivalent due to the case differences, but just wanted to know for my own reference and to save a couple of bucks on the next filter change. Nice bonus for my own familiarity.

Go to www.mercedesshop.com tech forum, and ask questions. They are very helpful guys, like this list, and should be able to advise on stuff to look at yourself, and who in the MB world has some knowledge of the 928 installation.
