Hmmm... is that the conclusion?

I think this has been discussed before and I have removed my smog pump because it drains power from the engine. It has been done many times and I have never heard about any problems.

Search the archives for more info.

No, the conclusion is that the air pump *will* help with emissions, but running with one disconnected will generally not cause you to fail an emissions test if all the other systems in the car are working as they should.

It absolutely helps to burn the fuel more completely. So it does help with emissions. But that pump also absolutely does rob power from the engine. But then again, so does the AC, etc. It's one of those things you can remove, if you really want to extract every extra horsepower you can. But you may burn a little less clean if you do.

Default How do you test this system?

Hi all,

I just noticed the hose going to my air filter is disconnected. I was going to reconnect it and thought why not ensure the system is working before I do. Does anyone know how to verify the system is operational? Belt turning? On idle? Power to a series of switches? I dunno…

After this long even if everything is connected properly and the bypass valve functions - its quite possible the pump hardly pumps any air. I'd look to do a functional (flow) test of the pump. How to test partly depends on the year.
