Question Fuel pumps. They suck because they dont suck!

Hello All,

I have a 78 with another blown fuel pump. About 5 months ago, I purchased a refurbished one from 928 specialists. Now I believe it is out of warrantee. Can anyone recommend a new replacement that’s not over 200 dollars? Maybe some other VW or possible 911 parts. Any info would be helpful.

Michael

PS. Has anyone tried returning refurbished parts to 928 specialists?

As your screen name indicates, you are trying to maintain your 928 economically (or "kostensparend", as we would say in German).

Have you even asked 928 Specialists about warranty? I would think that if it goes bad in less than 6 months they should either replace it under warranty or goodwill.

I have heard lots of good things about the guys at 928 Specialists - I can't see why they would deny you a replacement after such a short time.

Give it a try and keep us updated, OK?

Micheal,

I agree with Nicole, try talking to Jeanie or Dave first (I have nothing but good things to say about these guys). If in fact the pump is bad and its out of warranty there are a couple of options under $200 new.

A word of caution... I would be concerned about the frequency of failure and would NOT throw another pump in without getting to the bottom of the problem first. You could be starving the pump by running the tank too low or you may have a clogged pickup screen or a colapsed line. The tank could also require cleaning. You may find that one of these other issues could be the real problem and you may not need a new pump at all.

If you determine that infact a new pump is needed let me know if you have 2 pumps or 1 and if you need the internal or the external.

Nicole and John,

Thanks for your feedback. You are both correct about 928 specialists. They have been very good to me in the past and I will be calling them first thing tomorrow. The fuel tank has been cleaned and the lines replaced. The car was sitting for 2 years in the Las Vegas sun. Both fuel pumps were shot so I got one from 928 specialists. It had two, but 928S said I could get away with one. Maybe I drive to fast. Could it be eletrical? I will keep you posted.

Thanks again,

Michael
