Default Fuel pump/no start

My 83 refused to start 2 weeks ago after running fine all day. Got home and started a search on here for advice. Got spark, TB ok, 'thought' I was getting fuel. I can't get the Temp II sender to give me any ohm reading. The car has always been very thirsty w/gas. Sunday it started right up and idled fine UNTIL I plugged the temp II plug back up; killed it dead. Went to check for fuel pressure and I have no gas in the fuel rail. The fuel pump was thumping when jumped so I assumed that it might be locked up. I took the pump off and it sounds like it is running, but it will not pump fuel.No obstructions from the tank or from the filter up to the fuel rail. Looks like I need a new pump.
What caused the temp II sensor to kill the motor? Isn't this my running rich problem? Ohm meter across both terminals (I know you're not supposed to) shows a dead short.
Anyone else have any experience w/this??
