Post Thermostat Housing Gasket

I thought I torqued down both my thermostat housing bolts pretty well, but it's leaking out of the top. There was no gasket on it when I took it off, is there supposed to be one there?

Think there should be an O ring.

The seal is made with a thick o-ring which sits between the thermostat and the cover.

Irk!
Dennis,
When Dave and I were waiting for Pattycakes to cool down (2nd time)-SITO- shARKANSAS after Dave trotted down to the Crick' for that Porsche approved CrawDaddy water. We rigged a test jumper for the fan off of the eng. comp, jump plug and pulled the thermostat, it was stiff so Dave gave it a thump which was followed by a familiar tearing sound. MERDE!
There was a gasket. I used a razor blade to remove the piece stuck on goose neck and lower housing and Dave patched it back up out of sealants in one of my three 'black bags'.
When I flushed Pattycakes and removed my field modified thermostat upon returning home I fabricated another gasket and installed it.
Is the gasket an early model only deal?
P.S.
Do you remember that 944 thermostat #

The seal was replaced with the thermostat. Still leaked.

Ernest the " generic " replacement is a Mercedes part and is often supplied with a rubber 0-ring that is much too thin . You may need the correct Porsche size o-ring for the housing to seal . There should not be any gasket on any 928 .....

For those interested, YM '83 does not have the smaller inner gasket -- only the larger O-ring. Scale can build up on the housing where the inner gasket would be, I cleaned mine before I installed the new T-stat.

John,

A gasket will seal the leak but it won't hold the thermostat far enough back to close off the recirculation port. The travel on the back plate of the thermostat is about 8 mm and the O ring is about 3 mm, so that means that up to 36% of your coolant is not circulating through the radiator. If your cooling system is in good shape, it may not be noticeable. Considering your Texas summers, why risk it?

As a word of advise it's important to replace the rear seal behind the thermostat as well as the seal around the front of the thermostat. I replaced my lower oring on the thermostat housing assembly as well where I had my leak and that stoped all my leaks there. You my also want to place a thin coat of yamabond sealant #4 around the seals very lightly but for this application it should not be needed. That is if all your seals are ok. Dave.

I replaced the rear seal also and noticed that the car runs cooler.
