MOMO Steering Wheel On Airbag Equipped Car
I need help installing a MOMO steering wheel on an airbag equipped 91 928. The MOMO hub adapter does not work. Has anyone done this? Any suggestions?
Thanks, Jeff

Phil Tong of San Francisco did this on one of the 928 GT he owned. He had to do lots of mods with a dremel tool to make it work. Interestingly, on his next car he lived with the airbag steering wheel...
I don't think that disabling the airbag is a good idea. At the very least you'll have to figure out how to block the warnings from the 928s computer system. And you'll have a very hard time reselling the car. Once you've done it, the car will be considered "butchered", and future owners will curse you forever (see PO threads on this board).

I would also mention that defeating the safety equipment originally installed MIGHT make you liable if anyone driving the car got injured ....say the mechanic working on the car who test drives it....... a subsequent owner ???

Does anyone know if you could install a airbag equipped steering wheel from a Boxter or some other late model Porsche? The later model wheels are certainly more attractive than the stock 928 steering wheel.

Sounds like trouble.

FWIW
AJ-USA has a nice 930 steering wheel for the 928 in both versions (bagged and unbagged). I put the unbagged one on my 89 GT as did Bernie. Jeeze they look GREAT. Click on the URL in my sig. and scroll down to see the wheel installed. web site is ajusa.com I believe.

Yes, I installed it myself. It is not exactly intuitive forward, but if you pay attention it is not complicated. I did the non-airbag one, and included the adapter that AJ sells. The adapter was worth the price of the wheel as it extends the wheel location out by 3/4 of an inch and up about an inch. That got the wheel off my lap and allowed me to actually see the gages while driving. The plastic tab near the horn ring on the wheel, (which function is to trip the blinker off after having completed the turn), needed to be transplanted from my old wheel to the new one. You also have to get the horn wiring correct, and the connectors for the wire harness don't fit so you need to cut them off and install the correct ones. Otherwise it is a lefty-loosey, righty-tighty R&R.

Yep, I did the same thing as Gretch to the "T". It's rather quite simple and logical, unfortunately, one has to figure out that you have to use the old ring and modify the wiring. If I had to do it again, it would probably take around 15 to 20 mintues to swap....maybe less.
Great wheel, I love mine!

After a little research and instructions from Mark Williams and Abe Anderson, I've almost completed installing a MoMo wheel on airbag GTS. Here's a short procedure. I don't have the warning system disabled yet, and I'll post any differences once complete.
Installing MoMo Steering Wheel on Airbag Porsche 928
Parts needed:
• Porsche Airbag Test Tool #9516 ($245 - ouch) – disables airbag errors
• Porsche Horn Contact Bracket #96465210400
• MoMo Hub #7005
• MoMo wheel of your choice
1. Disconnect the battery. WAIT 20 MINUTES for the airbag capacitor to safely discharge
2. Center the steering wheel. Using a #30 Torx wrench remove the two screws found on the backside of either side of the steering wheel. Pull the airbag unit off and cut the 3 wires, 2 for the airbag and 1 for the horn. Leave enough wire to reconnect when you want to restore the original wheel.
3. Using a 27mm socket remove the steering wheel.
4. Remove the 2 screws holding down the black plastic cover.
5. Open the "airbag test tool" box up and take the resistor out of the box. Connect resistor to the airbag wires. Tuck the resistor unit into the bottom half of the steering column cover on the left side.
6. Re-install black plastic cover. Use the 2 screws so it lines up properly.
7. Slip the MoMo hub onto the column. You may need to cut the turn signal cancel tab a little down for the hub to install all the way down. Scribe the hub onto the undersize opening in the steering column cover with a pencil. Remove hub and black plastic cover. Using a Dremel tool carefully open up the hole to accommodate the MoMo hub.
8. Mount the horn contact bracket onto the metal plate (about 1 o’clock) covering the turn signal/light switch; make sure you push it in until it clicks in place. Carefully gauge the distance from the contact to the contact ring on the MoMo hub, bend copper tab up until hits the wheel contact ring. Re-install black plastic cover. Mount your MoMo wheel. Tighten and check for turn signal cancel and horn operation.

A little more on this...
You must use MoMo hub kit #7004.
If you drive the car after disconnecting the air bag system and before installing the test tool, then you'll need to reset the airbag warning system. Here's the link: http://www.clarks-garage.com/shop-manual/elect-12.htm
Any questions, email me at email@joedyer.com
