Default Upper Radiator Hose - do I have the correct part?

Hi all,

I'm in the middle of replacing the cooling system hoses on the gold '86.5 and ran into a snag with the upper radiator hose where it connects to the water manifold. The new hose will not go on due to a difference in the diameters of the hose and water manifold nipple.

The inner diameter of the new hose (928.106.238.08 by CRP Industries) is 1 3/4" at the water manifold end whereas the corresponding nipple on the water manifold housing is 2" in diameter (2 1/8" if you factor in the metal ring).

The old hose (#928.106.238.04 - original 20+ year old part) inner diameter at the water manifold end is 2". When I replaced the hoses on the green '86.5 last year, I didn't have this issue. I found the old hose from that car and it too was 2" in diameter on the water manifold end.

According to the PET, 928.106.238.08 is the correct part# for my model year.

Has anyone encountered this problem before?

If so, what was the resolution?

Thanks,
Adam

Hi Adam,
The hose needs to be a tight fit. If you use some dishwasher liquid it slides on there very easily and is a perfect fit. I cannot compare it to a Porsche hose as I do not have one. I suspect that the diameters would be the same or similar. We need to compare new for new as an old hose will have taken a set of the diameter it slides over.
CRP & Elaplast are the 2 OE's I am aware of.

I just checked the ID of both the Elaplast and CRP hoses and they are 1-7/8" so the delta is more like
1/8".

I replaced both upper and lower hoses about 2 years ago. Upper hose # 928 106 238 08 09 2005
Lower hose # 928 106 239 08. Hope this helps.

Hi Roger,

A little dishwasher liquid on the inside of the radiator hose was the trick!

Thanks!

Hi Adam,
Glad that worked, however I will order a Porsche hose to double check that the OEM hoses are the same.
Thanks for the heads up.
Best,
Roger

I have found that different distributors sell different hoses and also different thickness hoses .
I got 2 sets at the shop one from the dealer and one from one of the suppliers I went with the dealer hoses since they looked like original hoses and the original thickness .
The supplier parts were thinner walled and also bent slightly differently
