Just tell me I'm crazy so I can forget it!
Came across an 82 928 today that probably didn't have too hard a life until the last ten years. The body is pretty decent - couple of dings. The interior is shot - too much sun - everything is coming apart at the seams - literally. The engine fires right up and runs strong. The trans shifts nicely except it will not go into 3rd gear.
I can buy this car for $2K -clean title and records.
I'm really a 911 guy and have a nice Club Racer that I enjoy. Problem is, I have always longed to put together a 928 8 cylinder track car.
Please tell me that this will only give me grief, that performance parts will be unobtainable and pricey. That I should just drive my 911 and give it up!
Thanks,
Mike Quigley

Based on the discription you would have to be nuts to spend 2K on this car... Unless its a 300 hp Euro-S, then thats a differents story all together. Check the vin number and get back to us, that important detail makes all teh difference.

Thanks for the insight. In looking at the engines/years, the 4.5 seems like the weak sister in the group.
What would I look for in the VIN that would tell me if it is a Euro?
Thanks,

Yup, you're crazy. Welcome to the club.
I can't help with the euro designation thing, but know that all 928s have very positive attributes. It might not have the biggest engine, but it's also non-interference you can sleep at night (or rev really high) without wondering if you're going to break a TB and bend all your valves.
The people who have posted here know their stuff and know that for what you describe, you could get it for less, or for the same amount you could get one in better shape. You're in Denver so I don't know if it's worth it, but there's a guy here in south Jersey selling an OB for that OBO on Craig's list. Look up a post from Rhys, it had pics and everything. We're convinced it's only not starting because of something minor, it was a DD until it was parked before the winter. His only issue is he hurt his back and can't put the time in to work on it.
There are lots of 928s like this that are just a PPI away from being 'discovered', you just have to be patient. To 'put together a 928 8 cylinder track car' obviously the interior wouldn't be a concern, but the running gear would, so you should be able to find something. Most of the cars I've seen for sale in the past few years that didn't sell right away were passed over because the interior or paint were bad. If you're planning to track it, those aren't major concerns.
The engines in these cars will run forever if maintained. Mine is a 211k mile DD and it starts and runs like a race car every time.
Good luck!

Don't rely on the VIN, as even if it is a Euro, the motor could have been replaced. Check the motor code itself, the rest of the car is pretty much the same ROW vs US anyways.
