90s4 euro auto.
Hope someone can come up with an idea,
As mentioned in an earlier post have recently had the torque tube fixed (I hope).
When the car is first started there is a grinding noise coming from the transmission area whilst the car is in either park or neutral, putting it into the relevant gears & the noise goes away? After warm up the noise in Park & Neutral disappears.
Can anyone shed any light.
Thanks in advance,
Gary

Tim,
I'm assuming your from the U.K
I got the torque tube fixed by Ernie at Lodge Sports in Manchester(England), they do look after a few sharks. Also Mark at Porscheshop in Halesowen, Birmingham knows a thing or two about them.
If you want numbers let me know, where are you out of curiosity??

Gary,
Change the trans. filter and fluid, when the pan is down check for metal in it. Make sure you match the replacement filter to the one you took off.

Gary,
I have the same grinding noise in my 1884 S2 – It comes and goes
That has been recognised to be the two converter bearings (On the in-put shaft of the converter)– This two bearing are ‘one time greased’ and if the car has been stored for longer time, you can get this problem.
A relatively simple operation - But I have not changed them yet.

Thabks for the replies guys,
Had fluid changed when toque tube was done although don't expect the filter to have been changed, will sort that out.
Could possibly be the torque converter as somebody else mentioned this before. I am also under the impression that it has been stood for a while at one point in it's life.
Will check that out too.
Thanks again
Gary

Tim,
Thanks for replying, I'm not to far from you myself, as I live in Faringdon, Oxon. Look forward to your feedback with regards my problem(s)
I'm assuming you've checked all the posts on this site with regard's engaging gears?
By the way, did you go to the autojumble last Saturday in Woburn Abbey??
Speak soon,
Gary

Gary
38 - 122 workshop manuals
Trouble shooting section
condition
light grinding noise in selector lever position P and N
cause/condition
this noise concerns a normal noise from the front gear set which cannot be eliminated
hope this puts your mind at ease
wish my box problem solution was as easy as this
cheers

Tim,
Thanks for looking at the manual for me, that has put my mind at ease, somewhat!
What is exactly the problem with your's, is it a certain gear that won't engage or what???
Hope I can be of some help, if not I know a man who may be able too.
Cheers Gary.

Tim,
That’s very good info you gave regarding page 38-122 – I have totally overlooked this!
Now I can also be relaxed and do not need to change my converter bearings.
Thank you!
