Post Looking at an '83 928S with a strange problem

A lady called me this morning about her black 83 928S also. She said its a great car and all but one problem....The reverse only works after the car is warmed up and everything. Does anyone know what the solution could be to this 928? I would like to buy a car i know i can fix. Could it be a torque converter that causes this? or????? <img src="confused.gif" border="0">

Andy, I don't think it'd be the torque converter but perhaps something internal in the tranny itself that isn't functioning until the fluid warms up. Tiny, tiny chance it can linked to the shifter cable but I really doubt that.

Do you know when the fluid was last changed? If it's been a while, try changing it again. Keep in mind that the removal of the transmission itself is a very involved process if you have to go there.

Good luck.

Andy, when a trans gets to this point, it is in need of a rebuild, plan and simple.

Most likely it is a internal fluid seal problem. When the fluid get warm the seal(s) swell and the pressure come up enough to operate as designed.

Ask one of the "Big three" for a quote on a remanufactured trany, get a quote for the labor and sundries.
Then add this number to the list of other things the car needs. Deduct the total from the asking price (assuming it is within market value) then make her an offer.

If she takes it, you will be able to fix the car without being upside down in it.

If she doesn't, no big deal! just go find another one. All you will have lost is a little time.

There may be good news ...

There are three main possibilities for no power flow in reverse, and two of the three can be fixed without pulling the transmission - how lucky do you feel?

1) Remove shift valve housing, check brake band B3 and its adjustment.

2) Remove brake band piston B3 and replace seal.

3) Replace one-way clutch in gear set. (One of the last pieces to fall out of the case!)

Now for some controversial comments:
The problem may be mechanical (the one-way clutch). A fluid change might help, since it works when the transmission is hot.
The problem might be a worn seal. In this case, one thing that might help would be a transmission additive that swells the seals slightly. This will be a temporary fix - perhaps a year. Next time, the transmission will need rebuilding.

If I were going to buy the car and gamble, I would immediately add a can of seal softener/sweller. Read the lables on all the cans - you don't want to do anything except swell the seals. No stop leak, etc. Then drive the car for a few days, and see if it gets better. If not, you will need to try steps one and two, and you should change the fluid at that time.

If none of that helps, time for a rebuild.
