Cool

I've heard Porsche's fourth model line is going to be anything but "Entry Level"- it is essentially another 928- high speed transportation costing major $!

-I've done some research. The Cayenne V8 measures 94 mm bore and 84 mm stroke- thus it has different bore spacing than the M28 engine, and is certainly not a modified Audi V8 as I originally suspected. The Audi is undersquare, since it is based upon the EA827 engine from the VW Golf.

Porsche keeps doing that- escaping the EA827. The first time was when Ferry Porsche nixed a V10 engine for the 928 based upon two Audi 5 cylinders mated- the 5 being an EA827 with one added.

There is not going to be a Porsche underneath the Boxster. It would not be feasable to build a such car in Germany or even Finland (many of the Boxsters are built there).

Think about this: Porsche built a new assembly plant in Leipzig. The Cayenne will be beyond it's peak in product life cycle in a few years, so they need to find another model that will keep the production numbers up. Best would be one that shares parts and components with the Cayenne, so production processes and knowledge can be shared and shifted between the two different models easily.

I doubt there are too many other vehicle concepts that can be based on the 996/986 platform. The 996 will continue to be powered by a Flat 6, despite other rumors. A Flat 8 or V8 would not fit well, and move the center of gravity too far backwards. However, the Boxster and Carrera will take different directions when it comes to the look of the headlights and front bumper covers.

So, what does Porsche have to use for the 4th model line? The engine and suspension of the Cayenne are screaming "use me"!. Why not get more mileage out of all the engineering dollars put into those components?

I think the most likely scenario will be a luxury coupe or a sports wagon based on the Cayenne engine and suspension; not unlikely with 4-wheel drive for the street.

The big question: Where would they make the bodies? Cayenne bodies are made in a VW plant in the Tschech Republic, where the Touareg is built, so Leipzig does not have the capability for making bodies at this time. The body plant in Stuttgart is at max capacity, with no room for expansion. I'm sure, Porsche will find a solution, whatever the vehicle concept will be.

Don't expect it to be as extravagant as the 928, though. Porsche is not going to take the risk of building a vehicle with such polarizing styling again...
