Im building a 2.0L 16V engine - standard fare in VW for years, but mine has many special features and a lot of machine work done. I added 4 throttlebody direct induction, Forged aluminum pistons, and a standalone fuel system- to name a few. My projected HP will be 175 under normal aspiration. Currently im at the stage where I could add a supercharger and achieve up to 400 ponies with great ease. Not bad from a lite little four banger. To top it off, this engine goes into a 1,700 lb VW scirocco with mods to brakes and suspension. The heaviest single item on the car is the beautiful multiple coats of European yellow and gloss that cover it. I added a close ratio tranny, and quaiffe differential, and a tall final drive to keep me comfy on long ventures.
My point here is- my car looks virtually old and stock. Thats the fun of a sleeper. The project could have been done MUCH cheaper than the measly 5-6 thousand I spent thus far, But I insist on using quality workmanship, parts, and end results that remain streetable for daily use. So for about a grand any lil punk can throw in a turbo at his house in the garage and give 200 HP a run for the money- For about 500 more he can add nitros and smoke most stock Porches- for short runs. I suggest that anyone who wants to make a sleeper- GO VW. use an old MK1 Scirocco for their Porsche like agility, light weight, Italian styling, and CHEAP COST! www.scirocco.org
