Question 78 Transaxle questions

I have a 78 928 and recently dropped the transaxle.

The car was stuck in 4th gear- upon cracking the tranaxle open I found the 2/3rd gear rod on the left to be pushed back- but the topmost rod (dubbed the selector by me) was unable to reach the knotch to pull it back forward. So- I figure that somehow , during it's last ownwers shifting, the selector rod caught the knotches of both 2/3 gear rods, pushing them both back, and then rode forward in the notch of the right hand 2/3rd gear rod. Thus making all gear selection impossible from that point on.

Am I making any sense here?

The left hand 2/3rd gear rod is easily moved back. Little pressure restricts it when compared to moving it forward- so It is also feasible that maybe it recieved a jolt strong enough to move it without the selector rod.
Should I add an aditional spring and shortned dowel to the left side for the 2/3 gear rods?

can anyone determine what my troubles may be?

Ive been fighting this since I bought the car 2 months ago- so all help is GREATLY appreciated.

I hope you got a great deal on that car Mike!

Your problem is completely foreign to my meager knowledge base - anyone else with suggestions?

I beleive 1 of the 2/3rd gear rods you mentioned is actually a 4/5th gear rod (PET shows that there are qty=2, 2/3 gear rods which is incorrect). If you are looking through the transaxle top access cover with the differential towards you, the 4/5th gear rod is the rightmost rod. I suppose it is possible that 4th gear could be engaged and somehow (if there is enough slop between the selector rod and the gear shift rod assemblies) not disengaged when the selector rod moves. Check the shift finger on the selector rod for excessive wear. Luckily there are arresting bushings (pins) that prevent more that 1 gear from being selected at a time or you would have much bigger problems. Good luck!

Got a great deal on the car- under 2 thou.

she's even pretty to look at.

It's my first Porsche- Im a watercooled VW builder. MK1 Scirocco's strictly.

The 928 was not my first choice Porsche- but now that ive learned so much about her, I would say im more than pleased with the purchase. Only problem is that I havent actually driven a Porsche yet. I just own one and give it money. (sounds like marriage)

Anyhow- facing the trans from the front of the car- the rod that slipped back w/out the finger"" is on your left hand side.

No real wear apperent to the fingers notches- or the finger itself.

could this be a freak incident?
what else might it be?
anyone have a rebuilt for sale (cheap) (yes I said cheap in reference to Porsche parts)- In my car circle we practically give away parts. 4k and AGB trannys cost me 120 rebuilt for the rocco. lol

Thanks so far- your help is appreciated!

928 INTL farms thier transmissions out. You might want to call them and see if you can get the Phone number to the horses mouth so to speak.
