a/c abc's
in order to drop the a/c compressor for hoses, o-rings and fresh oil, does it's power line need to be disconnected in front of the right cam cover (or elsewhere) and, if so, how does that (rectangular) connector unhook? also, any ground wires?

I'll take a shot at the connector question:
On this type connector there is a wire clip encircling the center of the connector that is pulled back/removed to allow separation of the two halves of the connector.
Wally, correct me if I'm mistaken - that's what I pay you the big bucks for <img src="graemlins/roflmao.gif" border="0" alt="[hiha]" />

There is normally a connector a few inches from the compressor on the hot line. The ground wire on the compressor sometimes hooks to the bracket fasteners, sometimes runs to an engine ground a few inches away, and sometimes has a plug connector.
Check on top of the compressor before you unbolt it for the wires and connectors.
If the connector is a locking type, Randy is correct. There is usually a locking wire that is pulled out to release the connector.

thanks. i knew i'd just have to dive in and see what's there. i did find the short pressure line/hose to have a leak right above the tranny line underneath the big rubber grommet. funny thing though, it appeared to be from the metal portion, not near the crimp. i'll update if it's a fatigue or stress crack issue.
the connector i referred to is on the front of the right cam cover. what is it?

That's the power line to the AC compressor - power flows through it when you activate the AC switch on the climate control panel.
What a coincidence - we both have the same number of posts - occuring on this topic.
