Default S & S4 Brains: Any interchangeability?

I have a full set of computer brains for the '85S....and no spares for my '87S4. I had the extras as "just in case" parts for long trips when I owned the '85S.

Question: I know these brains are not fully interchangable....but would the '85 brains work in an emergency to get me home in the event of an S4 brain failure? And at highway speeds?

Another option might be to trade the '85 brains for S4 brains. PM me if you're interested.

Thanks,

H2

The brains are not interchangeable, not unless you want to upgrade your S4 to the superior '86 engine...

As Shane said..... not interchangable. S4 and later ECUS have 35 way connectors, earlry cars have 25way. And that's only for starters :-)

A good option would be to sell the 85 ECUs and use the money to have your S4 LH ECU rebuilt. Then it will be very relaible. That's why I give a 3 year warranty on my rebuilds.

EZKs are very relaible, more so than the earlier EZF.

The easiest way to acquire brains is to find an S4 parts car.....and part out the stuff you don't want to keep...

If you want to trade the 85 brains against a warranted LH rebuild, PM me .....

Thanks, John, for your kind offer.

Brains and relays are so easy to replace, at this point I prefer to just have a known good LH in my toolkit. Also a spare may help in diagnosing weird symptoms and may help rule out a defective LH someday.

I try to carry spares of various brains, relays, hoses, etc. including a spare (new) MAF. There's a lot of dirt between repair shops here in the Western US and I hate walking. I've never had to use any spare parts yet but one never knows.

On the other hand, I've seen a couple of 928s on the road that probably should be towing a complete spare engine in a trailer.

Nope. Tain't Walt K. But he learned me to be this way. And I've bought spare parts from him. I always got the impression that he parted more 928s than I have fingers.

He's a brave soul. He bought quite a few 928s in far away places and drove them hundreds of miles to his home in Carrot Land (Gateway to Nevada).... Experience has taught him to carry critical extra parts with him.

I miss Walt's interchanges, especially when it included guns, planes, and comparisons of 928s to wimmen. Or something like that.
