Unhappy 928 S2-all warning lights lit, gauges all zero

1984 s2 auto (RHD)
just bought my first 928. PO could not get it to start and was going to break car and sell parts. PO has modified wiring in attempts to get the car to start. fault was with battery earth strap!! (note all....always check the simple things first!!!) car now runs.....but... all warning lights lit, all gauges at zero. car runs with ignition plug pulled from back of ignition switch! engine also races, getting higher rpm as it warms, settling at about 2500rpm (i guess - no gauges!)

I had the all lights and no gauges symtoms.
Turned out to be the Centeral Warning System ( CWS ) located in the S4s dead petal. (A small box about the size of a modem with 2 connectors).

Its only a few screws to remove the foot rest.
Then try un plugging the CWS -
if your gauges work - then it is the CWS.
( Its capicators fry due to age ).

Dont run your car for too long with out it because of the timing belt warning light - a good warning light to be functioning.
