Cracked dash

Cracked dash
Well, do I even need to explain this problem? I have a 1985 928S that was sitting in the California sun for a good part of the 1990's. The dash has many cracks in it. The pod has a hair line crack but I can live with that. Anyone have any ideas other than the used(!) 500$ replacement dash? What about the covers I have seen for around 100$? I would really like to avoid putting carpet on it!

So in the above mentioned site, it appears that they do not completely re-cover the dash with a new material, but fill and sand the cracks, prime, then "texture" the finish. Intresting.
Has anyone bought one?

I have had my pod reconditioned by Dan, my dash was pretty bad too but Dan has yet to offer the service on the dash. However he does have information about what services others offer.
You can get the dash covered in vinyl but if I was going to spend the money i'd get justdashes to do the job properly. Its $$$ but it will be better than new. I was lucky in that I found a great used dash.
You can see my interior re-assembly here

Hi Sharks,
I just spoke with just dashes. They gave me prices for dash refurb. They strip dashes down, rebuild foam, and replace vinyl. They said that it would cost $400 for the pod, $600 for the dash, $50 for color match, ~$60 shipping to NC. Allow 6-8 weeks.
The last I heard, you cannot get new dash components from Porsche.
The pod guy sounds really good. Why does he not do the dashes? Seems to me that dashes would be easier, with fewer contours.
Does anyone know of more options for professional refurb?

Brad, and Thomas,
This is a long shot but give it a try.
Go to a good to top end auto body shop.
And ask them to check around. If you can wait a week or two I'll be checking in with 'my' shop.
When they did the estimate for Pattycakes everything was automatically priced and the 'MAN' found three(3) New single piece Left Quarter Panels in Atlanta, GA. They also listed 2 piece Quarter Panels - same price, more manhours - and multitudes of hardware, seals, trim pieces.
I'm not sure if he sourced the parts by phone or worked off of the Allstate - proprietary, $600.00 a month fee - PATHWAYS PROGRAM which is a product of CCC Information Services, INC. .
I'll ask!!! But the parts are out there ...
Have you tried 928 International for an outright replacement?

Thom,
I saw a post from Dan on the maillist and he said he's looking into doing the dashes but isn't happy yet with the process and product. Maybe in the future?

What is there to refinishing the pod? Mine's cracked- I hate it. My dashboard is champagne leather [I hate it; If I had to do it over I'd have it redone in black] and it is in great shape.
I'm worried about "bondo-ing" it up with black putty and then attempting to re-create the pattern.
One thought: take a piece of black cloth [black polyester of a fine weave?] or black leather and cover the thing. I guess this would lead to some rubbing on the dashboard [I have my pod/ steering wheel set for the lowest possible level]. Has anyone tried this?

Hi Sharks,
Thank you all for your follow-ups to my follow-up.
Some history: I tried a few types of crack fillers. They all showed crack fill areas after paint. Some cracks reappeared at the edges of the repair. My brother once glued new vinyl over a cracked dash. You could see outlines of the cracks in contours of the new vinyl. I bought “good used” pod and pad. They cracked again after a few months. The cracks are minor, and some vinyl paint is now pealing. I have had peals of the vinyl paint in other areas even after a second application. (I never had any pealing when I repainted the vinyl on my old mustang convertible interior. At this point, it would be tough to change paint products to that brand.) The pod and pad replacement was a whole lot of work. I do not want to go through that again with replacements that won’t last. The $900+ cost of used parts is worse than my labor time. The $1200 cost of refurb parts (including shipping) is hard to swallow for repair number 2. If I can get a good refurb for a few hundred dollars, I may consider doing the labor again. For now, I will probably do more intensive prep work before paint. I can fill in the cracks, and hope for the best.
Thanks again for all the good ideas.
