WTB: Need a Lower Ball Joint Boot... yes, just the boot
Here I go again… sourcing another obscure part. I need a lower ball joint boot – just the boot. The PO replaced the ball joint which looks almost brand new with the exception of a tear in the boot. Having a hard time finding just the boot for sale… don’t want to have to spend triple digits for a new ball joint just to replace the boot. If you have a boot, or have an old ball joint that has a usable boot please PM. Thanks for the help!

you can buy a boot cover but they are crap, you cant replace the boot, its put in when the joints are assembled
The cover is like a polyeurethane thing and i remember seeing some in BMW magazines years ago. I am sure you can still find them but look for them in eurethane, if i remember thats the material they used, probably because those bushing manufacturers were popping out the covers and they only work with one chemical.
again, you cant just replace the boot., they should be pressed in

You can use the Audi boot commonly sold for upper ball joints. 928 Intl and 928 Specialists have them on their websites or you can buy them at your local Audi/VW dealer. They are usually $20-25 each. It's expensive for just a boot but better than $110-150 for the balljoint.

last i checked the ball joint itself was under $40
either leave it alone or buy the whole new ball joint (not the entire arm) I wouldn't waste $25 on a cover which isnt sealed on the bottom. Its more like a hat then a replacement cover really.

Ryan, what are you talking about????
This is a lower balljoint for pre-86 cars. It's $118. The boot is just held on by two wire retainers.

The boot is Audi part# 431.407.377.A https://www.928gt.com/ps-84-121-ball...oot-77-95.aspx

Matt,
Interesting, my MY85 lower boots are not replacable, they do not have the wires holding them on, looks like they were installed when ball joint was assembled. I replaced both lower ball joints and the replacements are exactly the same.
????
The uppers were different story, used the Audi boots and they were held on by the wire rings.

I just replaced one that snapped 2 weeks ago and didn't notice it being any different than what I took off. I replaced the boots on mine a couple years ago. I have seen a few non-Lemforder replacement joints that use the polyurethane boots which just slide on.

So the upper ball joint boot sold by 928 Intl and 928 Specialists fits the lower joint? It looks like the lower boot is larger than the boot on the upper joint - but you'd know better than me... I'll take your word for it.

Somewhere along the way, I used a replacement boot from Auto Zone from their "HELP" section. Worked great, at about $3. Just threw out an extra that had been lying around for a few years.
