baseball bat
Can the fender lips really be rolled with a baseball bat, or am I missing some secret code words? If it can be done, how do you do it?

Yes it can be done... how? VERRRYY carefully. Best to practice on your next door neighbor's car before you take a bat to your 928.
However, if you're determined to do this job yourself, check out this site that Randy V. posted to rennlist about a year ago:

It shows a picture of a "real" fender roller" and how it is used. Tire Rack rents the tool pretty much for the cost of shipping. You should check with a local "high-end" tire shop as they will not only likely have the tool, but be happy to do the work for a decent price - it's not complicated, but experience pays off. If you decide to roll your fenders yourself, be sure to use a heat gun (carefully!) to heat up the fender... this will help prevent the paint from cracking as you roll the fender.
