Default Lower idler assembly/timing belt

I have replaced the bearing/roller on the lower idler assembly on MY 85' and put the assembly back on the block. It attaches to two prongs W/ snap rings. The assembly it self seems to have some movement on the two prongs, I can wiggle it up and down slightly. I did not see any plastic bushings when I took it apart and dont see anything in the WSM. Is this normal movement for the assembly?

It buffers any slack in the timing belt after passing by the crankshaft gear. More often than not, if the timing belt is properly tensioned it will not touch the roller.

You are fortunate that the idler assembly came off the two pins easily. On my green '86.5, I had a difficult time removing the idler assembly due to a build up of corrosion (no belly pan for who knows how long). After extensive cleaning and anti-seize on the re-installation, the idler assembly is now easily serviceable.

Yea I had ALOT of debris/crap from the belt rubbing and oil leaking out of the tensioner. Where I feel REALY lucky is that none of the bolts broke when I took the water pump off.

Sounds like it's coming along Greg. When do you anticipate having it done?

Good question, I plan on putting the heads on this weekend will be getting new cam gears, chain tensioner pads and new head nuts from Roger tommorow.(thanks Roger). Then will finish W/ timing belt and install my fuel line kit. Right now I am stripping the intake manifold and looking to get it powder coated. I should be ready by May in time for Sharks in the park at least thats the plan for now.

+1 on that - TB job I did on the 88SE I changed the bearings in both of those rollers as I could well beleive that neither roller had turned since 1988 - both were rusty with no sign of the belt hitting them ever and the bearings were seized solid.

The early engines used a plastic slide , then one roller ....then two rollers as mentioned with correct tension the belt does not hit the rollers much at all if ever !
