Default 1987 Four Door Factory S4 in person at Amelia Island Concourse

At the Amelia Island Concourse yesterday, amongst the 300+ incredible cars, in the new category of "Cars You Never Knew Existed", there it was; The one of a kind, factory made Four Door 1987 S4! WOW, soooo cool to see it in person.

It was built at the factory with AMG for Mr. Heinz Precther, owner of ASC(American Sunroof Corp.), a large auto aftermarketer just south of Detroit. It has a wopping 8,764 miles and is in its original unrestored condition. Could use some normal minor cosmetics. Personally, I didn't think the rear windows looked too cool. The trim at the bottom of the hatch window in the corners needed some attention too. Everything else looked perfect.

The car is in the estate of a collection owned by Neil Huffman, who passed last April. I spoke at length to the cartaken of the collection. First go around there were so many people around(20k attend the event during the one day of public showing), I could barely get any decent pics. Later in the day when the crowd was more sparse, I was able to look it over as I wished. He opened all four doors, popped the hood, let me look at anything I wanted. The VIN was under the hood on the passenger fender.

Interestingly, Mr. Huffman purchased it at an auction at Monterey about 8 yrs ago. He was a competing with a phone bidder and won. Turns out, the phone bidder was Mr. Bill Warner, the founder of the Ameilia Island Concourse! Mr. Warner called them this year to ask if they'd enter the car in this new category this year at the concourse. First time the car has been shown back in public.

I asked their intentions since something will happen now that its in the estate. I was told, nothing. The estate is so large with his other assets that they are simply maintaining them for now. They said they have had lots of interest in this car and others too. They know its rare and worth lots of $$$ & that it belongs in a museum. (Of course, in the spirit of Rennlist, I did my best to talk it down, ... that it'll need a TB/WP job; hoses; etc., but alas to no avail.)

Here's a link to more of the pics I took of it:
http://s199.photobucket.com/albums/a...view=slideshow I believe Chuck has a small partial pic of it on his registry site too.

I noticed they showed the HP as 326, its an auto & should be 316 right?? First time they've had a 928 entered at the concourse, though there are always some Porsches, typically famous race cars. Also the 1st time I've made the effort & voted for the People's Choice Award. Inspite of a friend telling me that I was playing favorites!

For those not familiar with the Amelia Island Concourse, it has in just a little over a decade become one of the premier concourses world wide. Compares right up there with Pebble Beach. In fact, anytime I speak to someone who goes to both, they always say they prefer Ameila due to it having just as many rare cars, more variety, and a much more casual atmosphere. Last year I got to speak to Alain DeCadinet(Victory By Design) & this year Barry Maguiar(Car Crazy & Meguiars products)! Very nice car people! I tried a couple of years ago to get the Florida Sharkers to come up to Jax & go to the event, but no takers. Oh well, its as good a car event as you could go to, not all sharks like SITM, but still an annual event that I will not ever miss!

I appreciate the significance of it but I still think it's ugly.

I tend to agree with you. My thought looking at it in person was, I'm glad it wasn't production & had an increased appreciation for the look of what I drove to the event in, my '85S!

Yes H, the rear hatch opened, I just forgot to ask him to open it for some pics! I know, I know, I realized later I dropped the ball on that point. Hell it was all I could do to speak half way coherently & not drool as I looked at it! But we did talk about the hatch being functional.

For sub 10K miles car the steering wheel stitching looks frayed and the plastics under the hood sure look yellowed.

Also in looking at the "manifold thread" that Kilbort started the intake is also missing the ribs found on later S4 intakes.

I wanna go back and look at the vin again, curious if this cars vin is anything like Marks pre-87.

The description on the documentation also states that this is a 5.4L?? Wasn't that not until later on the GTS?

yeah, they obviously just pulled some generic info on 928s for the display placard. The caretaker didn't know much about 928s specifically since he takes care of the entire collection for the estate. As I said, the car is in its original unrestored condition. The leather on the steering wheel had wear. I don't see what you mean about the plastics under the hood yellowing. I was suprised at how great the engine looked, the pics don't do it justice. It had a full leather interior & trust me, overall it looked extremely nice, as would be expected for the mileage.

I hate to say it, but that rear 1/4 view really makes it look like a Pacer.

yeah, the caretaker didn't even know what the rear spoiler looked like on an S4, so I gave him the 928 version of "history of da spoiler".

Very interesting!

Flush custom rear quarter glass and custom rear hatch with flush glass.
Looks like a one-off rear hatch glass with no rear defrost.

Spoiler and rear wiper delete, of course.

Course the caretaker wouldn't let you do some high speed runs to see if there's any aero instability with the curved rear glass and no spoiler.
