It's unimportant as to whether the car is ugly in this case. It is the mystery that shrouds the cars. I applaud Nicole for her investigative work and knowledge to the degree she does know.
I am surprised to see 4 versions of this and would certainly be interested in the story that prompted these cars to exist.
Thanks for posting the pictures Mel and the time you took to find out more info over the car. The pictures are beautiful and I love the seats with the up and over head rests.
Yea, this may not (OR may!) be the most practical thing to do with a 928, but consider this. Think in terms of when the 928 was in production and the part it played in not only Porsche's history, but the automotive industry. The cars were untouchable price wise to most...probably similar to owning a Carrera GT these days and someone(s) somewhere had the funds and time to produce these prototypes most likely doubling the cost of a 928 for the time.
Forget the car, think about the story and concept. Truly a part of 928 history.

I recall that Metal Crafters in Costa mesa Ca was contracted to build two stretch 928s at one time for Porsche ??? They had to extend the central torque tube. Years later we made a special tube for another project not a 928 but the guys remembered the 928 layout and copied some of it. We also suppied some parts for a Ford concept car and one well known Hotrod builder is using a 928 transaxle , tube , clutch etc.....

So on a stretch 928, would there be enough sheetmetal on the roof to allow for a slightly bigger sunroof?
Wonder if the roof can be made a tad taller to simulate the 928's curved roofline on a stretch concept.

My contact at AMG already responded. He asked a number of people who have worked there for 25+ years, specifically those who work in the custom build area. They told him they have never worked on a 928, let alone any other Porsche or any marque other than Mercedes.
In other words: Someone somewhere made this up. These cars never saw the holy halls of AMG in Affalterbach - even though they are just a stone throw away from Porsche.
However, now that this rumor has spread, I bet we will hear and read this as a fact for the rest of our lives...
