Question Calling John B. from the Misty Isles'

John,
Was talking to Snow re: his minor coolant leak -head area, left bank-.
He is thinking of putting off the fix till belt change, etc., a year or so down the road.
Having seen the flicks you posted when your sHARk went down I suggested he back track thru the Archives and see what long term electrolytic corrosion can do to a head and block. I checked and the post with flicks was on page 9. I couldn't find the original post that started you on the engine teardown. Additionally, the site you posted the flicks to is now a non-page, so no flicks... Any chance you can repost the flicks or fax em.....to me or Snow. I know you weren't planning on a fresh engine when that problem developed and with your help I would like to keep
that problem from developing in another sHARk.
TIA
P.S. How is the fresh engine? Your sHARk? The weather? The Pound? Yhe Chunnel?
You know...since the Aurthur Treacher Franchise's shut down in the early 70's one simply cannot find a decent Fish & Chips joint in this country.
I haven't had a decent portion since I left your bastion of British Beef, home of the Corpus Mundi,

What would an SAS regimenmt have to do to be made "Queens own"? considering their training is already supposed to be the toughest in the world.

Flint,
Except for one lapse, where someone didn't count noses like they were supposed to, when it comes to Royalty security is what you could call tight.
One way, you develope 'undefeatable' security systems, including nuke sites is having covert/overt opns. types do a little exploring/testing of the system. Eventually, by virtue of finding weak spots you can re-enforce the system. The 22 pioneer's a lot if not most of the forced/covert entry and defensive techniques used by spec.opns the world over.
You may not want to hear this but, Delta, in its developemental stage, had it's pre-requisite testing, was modeled after, partially trained and equipment requirements set by...guess who?
Additionally, the Brit version of our Secret Service is peppered with ex-members -no such thing-.
While they may or may not 'show' as well as the Guards they are there and are the Queens own.
There are specialties within that outfit but they do have a great latitude in cross training.
James Bond "is the movies", these real people are the best there is in the real world.
Delta, the Seals, Rangers, and Force Recon are better equipped with high tech, and possibly delivery, but, they are not better.

Cool

A good friend of mine...

UAL First Officer Lucy Mitchell was in the RP in the UK....RP is the Royalty Protection. She was a bodyguard for the queen. I lived with her for a while...we are still good friends-

In fact I got her interviewed for her first 727 job. That was Express One International. We are still good friends...

She used to tell me about her fascinating former job; She was a London cop who heard that the RP was recruiting. Well, Lucy is, uhmm pretty #@ucking tough, virtue of her martial arts years, and easily qualified for the job.

She still won't mention the security arrangements at Buckingham Palace, but she was Her Majesty's preferred guard for a while and told me all the gossip-

[It seems Queen Elizabeth has a thing for driving- only she has bad taste in cars: she prefers Range Rovers. Lucy said she would demand to drive the truck when they were up in Scotland. And she flogged the poor 3.5 liter V8 unmercifully! She'd put on a scarve, grab Lucy, and drive 80 mph down NARROW Scottish country roads to the local village and shop in cheap stores....scaring the hell out of previous motorcycle-racing Lucy....]

It seems Charles has all the charm and passion of a freezer coil, and his progeny were brats. But Diana was a regular girl, who only drove a Jaguar because they wouldn't let her have a GERMAN Porsche 944, which she considered the best looking car in the world.

What all this has to do with my '85 S2 I don't know. Lucy likes my 928 but hates V8's- she thinks they sound too "American". Oh well- I'd make a comment, but I won't. I'll just point out that she now drives a genuine Toledo, Ohio-built Jeep.

Well, I drove it one day, and it is kind of fun to show at the beach in it- my surfboard hangin out the back when I reached the beach in Jupiter, Florida where she lived was pretty kewl...

Of course, my shark looks better disgorging my surfboard at Sebastian-

Anyway....Normy! and all...

hi john,

i wish the weather here would settle down, july? more like october, cold and wet. you are better off where you are i think. actually had fish and chips for lunch the other day, damn fine they were to!

the car is running fine with its replacement engine. notched up about 2500 miles so far. i have a few jobs to be done:

replace engine mounts.(if the correct ones ever arrive from rock auto - long story!)

sort air con - needs recharging.

interior trim needs minor sorting

paintwork has a few festers that need grinding back and painting. edges of ali parts mainly.

infact i have noticed a marked improvement in the car since i have been driving it. the auto box has become smooth as silk, was a bit sharp in its gear changing initially.

had some fantastic drives up in the welsh mountains - these cars just don't seen to notice hills! fuel economy has been good, about 24mpg on a run, about 15mpg locally. i tend to drive it flat out where ever i can :-) !!

had a blast with a lady driver in a audi TT, she pulled over at an indicated 150mph :-). i then tested the abs when a ford escort estate pulled out in front of me.....boy those brakes sure pull speed away!150mph -> 50mph in what seemed like 50 yards!

i still have the 'old' engine at home, in pieces, i will take some more digital photos of the corrosion damage on the heads. the engine shop has seen many of thee heads in this condition, both from 928's and 944's.

trying to get the engine running sweetly at the moment, it has a little hesitatancy at mid throttle settings, under load, absolutely fine at wot. but mixture at idle is spot on 1.5% CO (air pump disconnected, feed pipe plugged)my car hasn't got lambda sensors etc....open loop control. so i guess the air mass meter (hot wire) has gone off a little.

replaced so far:

tyres
brake discs and pads all round
shocks all round
engine!
all fluids/filters
injection ecu
spark plugs/leads/dist caps/rotors
cam belt/rollers/not water pump.

regards

John B.,
Thank you sir. You are indeed a scholar and a gentleman -greasy fingers and all -.
I have one other request to make ...what was the original Post/problem? I can't seem to find it in the archives using engine, leak, your good name, or, your renn number.
The reason - other than Snow - is I have noticed a number of posts concerning 'minor' coolant leaks, and puddles. If your corrosion problem pictures of the head and block is indicitave of a developing major problem we may be able to save a few precious 928 motors for down the road use...
Did you also have flicks of crank journal damage -thrust washer/TT windup/TC balloning?
Glad to hear your shark is healthy!
I am not embarrased at all to tell you that driving those rural castle roads in GB was bad enough...I would be scared - plain and simple - to putter along on ANY Scottish or Welsh macadam!
You're a better man than I am (Gunga Din).
Thanks for the reply,

john

the original problem was not being able to establish a correct mixture, the engine ran sorta ok, but would not perform, ran very lean at idle, and extremely rich on load.

after many blind avenues, i noticed that the engine was producing excessive blow by gasses at idle, leading to lean mixture. the reason for the rich mixture on load was because the engine was trying to seize, and more throttle was required to keep it going...hence running v rich. the crank had gone so far forward as to pull the pistons off center, causing the excessive blow by. the bores in the block show no signs of any wear, none at all, it had done 150,000 miles.

it wasn't until i took an oil sample (actually more ali than oil :-() that i realised what was going on. the engine showed no signs of cooling problems or any head gasket related problem.

when i finally pulled the engine out and broke it down did i find the damage to the crank and block. the crank had lost about 40' " off the thrust bearing face, and all the main journals where badly worn on the thrust side, with extensive cracking up into the valley. all the main bearings had been, or were, spinning in the block.

the heads both showed extensive corrosion around the waterways, the head gaskets where completely knackered. nearly all the gasket material had fallen into the cylinder bore water jackets, leaving only the fire rings, and associated oil/water way seals. another disaster waiting to happen! the corrosions had tracked along the gasket/head interface.

i will try and take photos of all the damage and i will post them asap, probably wed/thurs. v busy these next few days.

regards

johnb

BACK OFF TOPIC
John, I know what you mean. Always had a facination for the SAS, who not only helped us form Delta, but the FBI's HRU almost every other elite HRU in the world...except the Mossad. I also heard some interesting stories from an ROTC teacher (a retired Army Ranger LTC) about the Australian SAS he was liasion to in Vietnam. Plus, "Who Dares, Wins" has to be the best military motto I've ever heard. I try to take that to heart every time I go to work on my car.<----like how I worked it back on topic?
